|
17:08:10 128.1 |
Michael Caine:
I think it’s because he’s on our side and whenever there’s injustice you always want to, if only someone would come and do, you know you can’t do anything, we’re not powerful enough, and he is that sort of thing. It would never happen but he’s the great guy that will come and help you. |
17:08:32 151.1 |
Michael Caine:
I tell you the great gadget in this, they have this great big Batmobile right, and I was watching the film and I never saw the filming, I’m only in the butler, but they smash this car with these great big tires and it turns immediately into a motor bike, with these tires this big and it’s extraordinary, quite extraordinary. |
17:08:56 175.1 |
Michael Caine:
A good sequel you have to surprise everybody and you have further and deeper into the people and this is what Nolan does. |
17:09:11 189.1 |
Michael Caine:
I think he’s the best villain I’ve ever seen. I think he’ll get the Oscar, I think he’ll get everything, just such a sad thing that he died, this would have been his big moment |

"The Dark Knight" Premiere: Writer David S. Goyer interviewing
|
17:09:39 218.1 |
David S. Goyer:
Uh well first of all it was just the best experience that I’ve ever had and professionally working on Batman Begins and it’s specifically working with Chris Nolan so the opportunity to do it again was sort of a no-brainer, and you know then the opportunity to sort of uh have a hand in our version of The Joker was really and also Harvey Dent/Two-Face was incredible as well, no-brainer. |
17:10:05 244.1 |
David S. Goyer:
I think a good sequel is a movie that is not just a retread of the first film but something that expands upon and is perhaps even better than the first one. I think this one was but it was a scary proposition because we thought we kind of nailed the first one, and we spent a long time working on this story to even get to the point where Chris decided yeah I think we can do ourselves one better. |
17:10:31 270.1 |
David S. Goyer
Why? I think you know first of all he doesn’t have any super powers, and so a lot of these people can relate to him and anyone can be him, you know can’t be Superman you can’t be Wonder Woman, you know a lot of these other characters, but if you have a lot of money and a lot of training, well billions of dollars, you could become Batman. We tried very hard in both films to make sure that everything we were doing was absolutely realistic. All of the technology that Batman employs you know are technology that are in the books or in the works right now, so you know it’s theoretically possible. |
17:11:07 306.1 |
David S. Goyer:
No he’s a pretty tortured guy. I don’t think so. |

Nestor Carbonell:
I think it starts with the script. You know if it’s on the page you know you have a very good chance of making a good movie, and when you have after that a director like Christopher Nolan and cast you know this top notch cast, I mean tremendous, you know you have a good chance of making a good film. (Talks) No this is my first time, have you had a chance yet? No this will be my first time, yours and mine, so I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve heard amazing things naturally and the critics have been very kind to the film and uh and I hear deservedly so. |
17:12:12 371.1 |
Nestor Carbonell:
I think what’s interesting about him is that he’s a wealthy guy. You know Bruce Wayne’s a wealthy man and yet he’s somehow feels a calling to improve you know to fight crime. He doesn’t have to necessarily, it could rest on his laurels, but he does, and I think there’s something interesting about that. Uh I don’t know other characters that usually it’s hard to sympathize with a rich protagonist, and in this particular case he makes a reason to sympathize with him, so it makes it interesting. |
17:12:43 402.1 |
Christian Bale interviewing on the Red Carpet
|
17:13:00 419.1 |
Christian Bale:
Uh you know what there’s been many good sequels, Empire Strikes Back, God Father 2, you know there’s many times when a sequel outdoes the first one. I know what makes a good sequel with this one is Chris was given the carte blanche of what he wanted to do you know. He’s a serious filmmaker, he’s one of the best out there, and he was just given free range to make what he wants to make uh he comes up with one of the best movies around. |
17:13:21 440.1 |
Christian Bale:
I’ve seen a rough cut with Chris. (talks) I thought it was fantastic. But I haven’t seen the complete, I haven’t seen it on IMAX, I haven’t seen the completed version. |
17:13:34 453.1 |
Christian Bale:
Um because I think he has the shadow side to him, you know there’s something to him that unlike many superheroes is which you can aspire to be, he has the aspirational quality that people would want to have themselves but he’s also very very human, you know he has a shadow side, he has a dark side, you can see very much that he’s driven by some dark emotions, and that’s what makes him fascinating. |
17:14:01 479.1 |
Christian Bale:
He does a fantastic performance. He’s really created an iconic portrayal of The Joker, I think it outdoes any previous portrayal I’ve ever seen. It’s a kind of punk, anarchic, servicious sort of approach to the character and I think that uh our job if Chris decides to make a third movie the real job will be how do we create a better villain than with Heath, I think it’s impossible. |
17:14:26 505.1 |
Christian Bale:
asked if another actor will portray the Joker in the third film No. |
17:14:34 513.1 |
Chin Han interviewing on Red Carpet
|
17:14:46 525.1 |
Chin Han:
Yes I have (talks) I was very very um, even knowing the script even knowing the story, working on the film for 6 months, uh I was astonished I mean by the quality of the film. It was just uh amazing. |
17:15:04 542.1 |
Chin Han:
Well what makes a good sequel, something that expands on the first film I mean that you know you don’t retread old ground or you don’t do the same thing again, and I think Chris has done that amazingly I mean what he has done with the film is he has expanded all the themes you know of morality, good, evil, and the scope of the movie is much larger as well because he shoots in Hong Kong this time and I’m very happy to be part of that sequence um so I think um he’s done a great job with this film. |
17:15:33 572.1 |
Chin Han:
For me uh what would come in handy? Um wow you put me on the spot here, I think I’d love to, I think uh a man-bag, a batman man-bag would be very helpful for blotting all this oil from my face on this warm summer evening. I think that would be it, yeah. |
17:16:07 605.1 |
Chin Han:
Uh absolutely, I think he totally deserves it, a lot of people are saying you know people are just saying this because uh he’s not around anymore which is very tragic but he totally deserves it I think he has given a great performance one of the great villains of all time, you know I was a big fan of Daniel Day Lewis’s performance in There Will Be Blood last year but watching Heath is equal if not better than even that performance, so I think he absolutely deserves it. |
17:16:36 635.1 |
Chin Han:
Yes I did, yes I did. Uh it was lovely, I think that he’s always very inventive and he’s always looking at new ways to do something, but never at the expense of his co-stars, so he’s always very considerate of his co-stars but he’s always just you know he’s just full of ideas even you know even just before we shoot you know I mean he’s still wanting to try and that’s always very exciting for a co-star because uh you always keep it fresh. |
17:17:11 669.1 |
Producer Charles Roven:
I think uh a good sequel is uh if you take a story that’s had a really good beginning and then expand upon it in ways that your audience in some ways hopes that you’ll go and then uh make them uh definitely not know where you’re headed. To make giving them surprises all the time. |
17:17:41 700.1 |
Charles Roven:
Yeah we felt we still had much more story to tell ultimately, that was one of the reasons that Chris Nolan agreed to work on a new story with David Goyer and write it with his brother Joel. And uh and we definitely feel that there was a further uh big epic story tell, and we think that we’ve achieved that. |
17:18:05 723.1 |
Charles Roven:
I think it’s a very inspired performance, it was great working with him and watching his enthusiasm for the role and uh we knew when we were capturing it on film that uh that he was delivering all that he uh wanted to. |
17:18:28 746.1 |
Charles Roven:
Not even thinking about anything now except for tonight |
17:18:35 754.1 |
Maggie Gyllenhaal interviewing on the Red Carpet
|
17:19:08 786.1 |
Maggie Gyllenhaal:
No, I never dreamt about it, and yet I really I quite liked it |
17:19:18 796.1 |
Maggie Gyllenhaal:
I did yes I saw the movie. (talks) I was blown away by the movie. I knew it would be good, I was in it, I was there, but I didn’t know it would be this good. |
17:19:31 809.1 |
Maggie Gyllenhaal:
To work with Bruce Wayne? Well um I mean with acting with Christian playing Bruce Wayne, Christian is very intense and very still and very um if you just look him in the eyes you rarely have to move in a scene. |
17:20:30 869.1 |
Gary Oldman:
Very excited. And um I don’t do these a lot and the last time I was at a New York premiere was with uh um Hannibal, so that was a few years ago. |
17:20:56 895.1 |
Gary Oldman:
Have I seen it? Yeah. (talks) Well I didn’t think it was possible, I thought Batman Begins was very good, and I didn’t think it was possible for him to uh to top it, it’s rare that a sequel is better than the first, and this better than the first by you know ten fold. It’s quite, it’s quite it packs quite a punch. |
17:21:26 925.1 |
Gary Oldman
Part of the what? (Talks) Well I’m it’s I’m with great company so you know it’s sort of you know it’s pedigree and to be part of it and to be part of it with Chris and Michael and Christian and Aaron and Heath you know I’m very honored. |
17:21:52 951.1 |
Gary Oldman:
Remarkable. Yeah he’s fan… have you seen the movie? He’s fan, no he’s it’s everything you know it’s had a lot of hype because people are saying how extraordinary it is and um it really is it is quite something to watch. |
17:22:11 970.1 |
Gary Oldman:
I think he will most certainly get a posthumous Oscar nomination um Peter Finch won for Network in 1977, um so he could win it, he could win it, it’s as good of work as anyone out there. |
17:22:34 993.1 |
Gary Oldman:
What Batman gadget would become handy? Well maybe at the party afterwards um yeah if you wanna make a quick exit you’ve got a grapple hook I guess, yeah? |
17:22:54 1013.1 |
Director Christopher Nolan:
Well I think the film builds on what we did on the first one I think it expands in terms of scope and scale, but it definitely digs into a direction suggested by the first film which is the idea of escalation the idea of what’s the criminal response to the birth of Batman in Batman Begins, you know so I think it does go some darker places some more intense places but hopefully it’s still a lot of fun. |
17:23:21 1040.1 |
Christopher Nolan:
Well uh I think I feel very uh very excited with so much anticipation around the film, but obviously that in itself is somewhat daunting, you know the film has a lot to live up to now, so uh hopefully we’ve done it right, but that’ll be for the public to decide at the end of the week. |
17:23:46 1065.1 |
Christopher Nolan:
Well I mean to the extent that, one of the things that’s very excited for me in showing the film and getting it out there, finding the people, is I’ve known for a long time how great Heath’s performance as the Joker is, and now other people are getting to share and I’m really excited that they seem to be responding, they seem to really be responding in a way that he would’ve intended |
17:24:10 1089.1 |
Christopher Nolan:
Well I think the performance is really outstanding, uh and stands out as a group of a lot of other performances, but uh you really have to see it. It’s hard to sum up. It’s very frightening and very intense, but it’s also funny and uh witty, it really has to be seen. |
17:24:30 1109.1 |
Christopher Nolan:
Um I certainly wasn’t surprised that it was a great performance but I was definitely constantly surprised on set by the way in which uh Heath was choosing to interpret the character. |
17:24:45 1124.1 |
Christopher Nolan:
Well I got intrigued by the notion that we left at the end of Batman Begins, a moment of escalation, the idea that Batman having come along and created this iconic presence uh that criminals were going to raise the stakes in turn, what would the response to Batman be? Uh that got me interested and that’s what we wound up making the film about. |
17:25:10 1148.1 |
Christopher Nolan:
Well I think Batman is great history and the elemental nature of his iconography. I think he’s got sort of a dark romanticism, a sort of elemental nature to the character that persists and sustains very different interpretations, that keeps him fresh over the years of generations of new fans. |
17:25:31 1170.1 |
Christopher Nolan:
I have no plans at the moment except to go on vacation. |
17:25:41 1180.1 |
Christopher Nolan:
Not specifically for tonight no there isn’t but thank you. |
