Because it’s a party, it’s a constant party, there’s never one serious moment you know when you’re on tour it’s a party, when your in the studio it’s a party when you’re at a party it’s a party, you know what I mean when you’re at home it’s a party, it’s a continuous party and if you’re a drinker you can go from a drinker to an alcoholic pretty easy you just switch that gear and all of a sudden you’re there. Some guys don’t have to go there, I did, I have a very addictive personality so I was stuck with it you know. When I first had my first beer I didn’t know I was an alcoholic, I mean I just thought it was one of the guys didn’t realize that that beer was a trigger, that for 34 years that I was still going to be drinking.

No you know what it is the songs is they live forever and the meaning and the feeling you get from them and you look in the audience and there’s 9 year old kids and there’s 90 year old kids and I don’t know its just crazy to me, it freaks me out (talks) Oh my god we were just in Russia, we did Sweden, we did uhm Dubai and Mumbai India and I looked out and I couldn’t believe it, its like 3 year old kids and 12 yr old kids and 30 yr old kids and 40 yr old kids and they all knew the lyrics, its great.

Uh were here tonight to pay homage to Alice Cooper uhm and uh Map which is really important, I think that’s really, that’s really the main draw here tonight is is Map and MusicCares and its, its uh it’s interesting because there’s so many artists that are uh addicted and alcoholics and its cool to kind of celebrate being sober.

Brad Smith- well I don’t know what endemic means first (talks) I play bass I play four strings for blind melon.
Rogers Stevens – I think you know uh people rock and roll attracts sort of unhinged type personality a lot of the times and I think the greatest temperaments sometimes can be unstable and who knows. Yeah there’s a lot of escape, yeah there’s a lot of freedom in the life style I suppose and uh some people take it too far.
Christopher Thorn – I think it affects a lot of people but we’re just you know because we’re out there we’re talking to people, we’re doing interviews we talk about substance abuse but there are plenty of construction workers who are dealing with it too so we’re just you know people are asking about it so (talks)
Brad Smith – You’re striking a cord with us though.
Travis Warren – I was gonna say that I think that it’s for bands it’s a high, it’s a high to get up on stage, it’s a high to do this whole thing and I think you know musicians or artists want to maintain that always and I think its very easy to fall into you know.
Glen Graham – Yeah not to mention the fact that uh you know musicians have a tremendous amount of time on their hands.
Rogers Stevens – And a lot of people make it readily available when you’re on the road so you have to be careful.

I would beg to differ with my dear brother Elliott (talks) I think the communal experience is much larger now and it’s a virtual community you know people, somebody in Russia could be downloading you know a crazy new band from Silver Lake and I could be downloading them too and we both hear that music and we both like it we are a community you know and its much bigger now. Its different, Elliott’s right it’s a different sense of the community but there is a community and I think it’s a much larger and ultimately more powerful community.

I don’t know that it is, I think it appears that way, I think human beings are vulnerable to substance abuse I mean life is tough and we’re always looking for little short cuts to make it easier and some of us are constitutionally different than others some people drink and it takes the pressure off and takes the edge off and there’s no problem. Other people start drinking and using to take that edge off and they have a bad reaction to it and it ends up being a bigger problem then the other problem. So I I understand why people are attracted to being loaded uhm I don’t think its not necessarily rock and roll that has a bigger problem then other walks of life its just we’re a little more in the lime light perhaps.
