In: 05.38.31 Out: 05.39.14 Sound Bite: Gary Fleder I personally can’t stand football movies when football is kind of like figure skating. The guys are kind of like going, oh I just barely missed you, and I said to Allan Graf who did 2 great football films, Friday Night Lights the film and also Any Given Sunday. I said I like these films, I feel like they’re real, and he said to me they are real, you know we draw out these plays and guys take real hits and real runs and real cuts and that’s how we shoot it and I said that’s how I want to do it. So I hired Allan Graf and I said I want to make sure that every single play in the film has a narrative intent and is not just a bunch of visual noise, the football should have a real progression to it so yeah I mean when you’re watching the football in this movie you’re watching real guys, ex-NFL guys, college guys playing and playing real. |

In: 05.39.26 Out: 05.40.12 Sound Bite: Gary Fleder Yeah I mean you do and I also carefully every single play in the film, is I think 50 plays in the film which is quite a bit. Every single play has been drawn out as a diagram, like a real play, and I sort of take those and do storyboards and shot lists and whatnot. It’s very time consuming and complicated and uh I figure out when I can put the actors in where they can be safe and Rob Brown is a real athlete. He played division 3 football at Amherst. He’s fast, he’s got grace, he’s got the size, which I love because most, your sports guy, sometimes these movies you see guys, you’re like, that guy can’t hit a ball like I can’t catch a ball and Rob Brown’s a real athlete, so it was great to put Rob out there. You see him on the field, that’s not CGI you know that’s the real deal. |

In: 05.40.21 Out: 05.40.54 Sound Bite: Gary Fleder I can’t tell you that. No I will. You know I really was very moved, one of my favorite movies is JFK and what I loved about that film is Oliver Stone would take real archival footage which we did at times and shoot his own archival footage and then sort of incorporate it so it gives you a sense of intensity and a sense of magnification of the moment, but also you can’t quite tell what’s real and what’s not real so we did that too, we blended archival footage with stuff that we shot and I can’t tell you what’s what. Even I can’t tell anymore, which is a good sign. |
