Adams – Joy and romance and spontaneity and fantasy, I love musicals.
Marsden – And the music, you know incorporating music into a story, into a you know.
Adams – I mean there’s that too.
Marsden – There’s that too but I like her answer better.

Marsden – We got to choose it.
Adams – We chose it.

Marsden – Musical turned film…
Adams – So many good ones.
Marsden – Um I’m gonna mess it up and name something that was like a film first and then, I can’t think of anything. My mind’s going blank. Musical then turned to film. Can you think of one?
Adams – Well Hairspray was a film turned into musical.
Marsden – That was a film turned into a musical turned into a film again.
Adams – Yeah it was really great.
Marsden – Yeah otherwise I would keep it in house.
Adams – Chicago is wonderful.
Marsden – Chicago’s great, yeah. Grease was never on stage right? Before the movie, no? Singing in the Rain was a movie made…
Adams – Yes there was a stage play Grease.
Marsden – Was it?
Adams – I think. As you can see we’re.

I’m a big fan of The Hollywood Reporter. That’s how I oriented myself to Los Angeles before moving out here.

I was invited to participate by Dan Jinks one of the producers of it. Just finished Jersey Boys on Broadway about a year ago and in August I came out to do Les Mis at the Hollywood Bowl and met all these people in Hollywood who were theater fans, Broadway theater fans and they asked me to do this and I’m just floored by the amount of people the kind of people that are doing this tonight. I almost wonder whether I deserve to be here.
01:05:24 308.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: John Lloyd Young
I’m performing “Something’s Coming” from Westside Story uh which is probably my famous musical in history after Jersey Boys.
01:05:36 320.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: John Lloyd Young
Musical turned to film, it’s gotta be Westside Story. And they chose the song for me, so I couldn’t be any happier.

Sound Bite: Laurence Mark & Dan Jinks
Jinks – We first started 4 years ago in Frank Mancuso’s back yard basically and it was a way to do something to give back to the community and we’re big fans of the motion picture television fund and we wanted to do a New York kind of an event here in LA.
Mark – And that’s the idea, it is Hollywood loves Broadway and that’s exactly what this is and you’ll see Tony award winners for days inside.
01:07:07 411.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Laurence Mark & Dan Jinks
Mark – Oh wow, it’s a grab bag. It’s seriously a grab bag, every once and a while…
Jinks – We’re great friends and we have very similar tastes and we pick people that we really want to see perform and it’s a show for us that, fortunately for us, everybody else seems to enjoy as well.
Mark – And when you see Kristin Chenoweth do Ice Cream and the New York Philharmonic you say, “Oh my God, will you please do it for us?” And she does.
01:07:32 436.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Laurence Mark & Dan Jinks
Mark – Oh wow uh wow uh that’s a hard question uh
Jinks – I’m gonna say 2. Cabaret is pretty spectacular and Dreamgirls which this gentleman right here produced.
Mark – That’s very sweet of him, and I’m gonna say Chicago because Catherine Zeta-Jones is a knock out, let’s face it, there you have it.
01:07:53 457.67 thumbnail
B-Roll – A Fine Romance Premiere – Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alan Cumming, Zeta-Jones, Adam Shankman
01:08:55 519.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Adam Shankman
Um I was approached by Dan Jinks and Larry Mark um they asked me if I would be interested in writing uh and directing the show and I don’t know I just said sure kind of blankly and next thing I know I’m suddenly doing it and here I am, and it’s great, we’re having a really good time. It’s a little nuts, I’m trying to finish a movie right now, I’m 2 weeks away from finishing Bed Time Story so it’s a little little silly.
01:09:21 545.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Adam Shankman
Um I know that the producers are in touch with talent. The talent is very involved in picking their own songs. It’s all songs that are related from Broadway to Hollywood stuff so it’s um you know there’s just a library of that kind of stuff so I take it and I see what I want to do with it.
01:09:42 566.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Adam Shankman
Westside Story. (talks) Why is it Westside Story? You know it’s just like the best one I think. I’m not saying it’s the best movie one ever made but it’s sure great and it’s just got my favorite score and it has some of the best dancing ever but there’s been a ton of them. I mean the easy thing would for me to say Hairspray. But I’m not.

First of all it’s got much bigger, which for us is just amazing because that tails into making more money for the fund and that’s what we’re doing and people who are gonna be watching the show tonight have been so generous and so I mean, my friends and my co-host Mr. Hugh Jackman and so many people who keep coming back for more I mean it means a lot to us in our industry to give back and to look after own which is I can’t think of any industry that does that.
01:12:51 755.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Well I’m starting off um, I mean tonight we have Adam Shankman who’s directing and he’s put together some fantastic clips and so we’re starting with um Mac and Mable and I’m gonna be doing something from there and Tap the Troubles Away and I’m gonna be tap dancing and then I sing um from Showbook, ??? so…
01:13:16 780.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Catherine Zeta-Jones
We haven’t actually signed black and white yet but I would pretty much do the phonebook with Steven Soderbergh and pretty much do pretty much else with Hugh Jackman so it’s a very interesting project so.
01:13:30 794.67 thumbnail

I don’t know, I think in times, especially these economic times, we need uplifting movies or you know and song and dance usually uplifts you and things like Moulin Rouge! Baz Luhrman’s and Chicago with Rob Marshall, there has been a resurgence of the musical and I hope it never goes away because it’s a big passion for me.
01:13:58 822.67 thumbnail

Westside Story, but I can’t say Chicago because that would be so big headed of me but um Westside Story and of course Chicago.

I’m singing a Stephen Sonheim song from A Little Night Music, that was a movie that nobody ever saw.
01:18:09 1073.67 thumbnail

Well music is like another language, it’s just something that touches people and it always has and it always will.
01:18:18 1082.67 thumbnail

Hmm I’m really bad at that question. I guess Chicago would be right up there. (talks) Because I thought it was a brilliant film. And my friend directed it, so. That’s also why.
01:18:35 1099.67 thumbnail
B-Roll – A Fine Romance Premiere – Kristin Chenoweth, Hugh Jackman, James Marsden, Kristin Chenoweth,

Thank you, um you know I have a really fun time with Hugh Jackman and really fun song from She Loves Me so I just try to do really fun entertaining stuff that also works for my voice so hopefully people are willing to enjoy it.

I’m a big old hen, I’m a big old show off, and that’s what it brings out, the ?. I’m one of those annoying people at the karaoke bar that you can’t get off the stage once they start. I kind of get nervous once I’m up there I’m like, I don’t know, a megalomaniac.
01:23:06 1370.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Hugh Jackman
Well I actually don’t know anything apart from what I’m doing because I’m a self-obsessed actor, and actually I came to rehearse my bits and went, but last year I remember just being blown away by all the people who were on Dick van Dyke and Cheetah Rivera and Shirley McClain and Jennifer Hudson and I know I’m singing with Kristin Chenoweth and Audra McDonald which is an unbelievable opportunity or career suicide, it’ll be one of the 2 and you’ll know about it in a couple of hours.

{sings} If I loved you, time and again I will try to say, bye bye.
