00:21:35 1289	Sound Bite: Kirk Honeycutt Um that’s a good question um, his audience is pretty broadier because you have dads who can bring their kids because dads having seen the film way back in the day, was it 27 years ago, and you’ll have certain teens who want to see Shia LaBeouf, and a lot of in betweeners too I think, so it’s a pretty broad audience as far as that goes. So I (talks) he succeeds in the people who want to see do Grand Theft Auto 45 or whatever it is, because I mean there’s non-stop action and it feels like a videogame in the wrong sort of way I think, and um I don’t know if he’s gonna get a lot of repeat business from the dads because they’ll say, oh, gee I remember Raiders and there was a lot of wit and character interaction between Karen Allen and Harrison Ford and gee, they’re both in this movie, why didn’t we see more of that? But never mind there’s a lot of good action and I just think he got over, Steven Spielberg got overwhelmed with the action and forgot about the people in the action.
00:22:55 1369	Sound Bite: Kirk Honeycutt Well it’s interesting, I think we’re seeing a movie that sums up a lot of his films: ET, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark. 1941 I didn’t quite see a reference to, but it was one of those things where there were a lot of references to a lot of Spielberg movies other than Indiana Jones, and maybe this is a summation of the first half or first third of his movie career, I don’t know. It was a curious way to go and I’m wondering when George Lucas came up for the idea of the story, and showed it to Steven and Steven’s going George, I mean what are we doing, how self-referential do you want me to get? But you know it’s obviously Spielberg is interested, what is it 19 years since we saw Indiana Jones got everybody aboard, but I was hoping that they would have done something a little more intriguing with the characters.
00:23:53 1427	Sound Bite: Kirk Honeycutt Well there weren’t any characters. You see people running through scenes but, and because you know them from 4 films now, you know who they are, but the new characters were very thinly sketched. Cate Blanchett was just sort of there. I mean My God, you have one of the greatest actresses in the world and you don’t put her to any use other than having these strange sword fights, and Shia, I don’t want to give away something about that particular character, there’s a lot of intriguing things that goe on in a 3 way relationship between he his mother who’s the Karen Allen and Harrison Ford that just kind of got, expositionary dialogue in the middle of all this action and not something that was where they actually played a scene that actually dealt with these relationships, and that would’ve been really kind of fun and I would’ve liked to have seen a little witty kind of reporter between these characters because it was all set up for that, you know you have a villainous who’s a woman who could maybe as part of her seductiveness would come on to Indiana Jones and he would respond to it or something like that, but she was just a typical villain. Hmm hmm.
00:25:14 1508	Sound Bite: Kirk Honeycutt No they were a little too cartoonish for me. We’ve had a couple of cartoons here on the cuaset and I’m not sure this wasn’t the third one because it just, there was a flatness to that kind of thing, even though the action was in full 3D, my God, a lot of CGI, they go over a waterfall 3 times, uh but you know it’s just a total disinterest in present people in an interesting way which the first one didn’t do. I remember Kasdan wrote that first screenplay, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and boy you really appreciate him now. I was wondering even when I was watching the film why they didn’t bring Larry back to write this. I mean maybe he doesn’t want to do it anymore, maybe that was then and this is now, it would’ve been really kind of fun to see that.
00:26:12 1566	Sound Bite: Kirk Honeycutt There’s this character that’s not quite the sidekick but a friend of Indiana Jones who every half an hour switches sides. I mean back and forth, so you never know, he’s a spy for you, I mean I’ve heard of double agents, but he might be a quadruple agent, I mean he’s like, it would’ve been nice in the end if he was on a side we never considered, but um, it’s set in the 50s and these are the communists here and he keeps switching sides between the Kremlin and the White House. I don’t know, it was very unclear, like everything was ill thought out, it just wasn’t like a complete character that made sense.
00:26:59 1613	Sound Bite: Kirk Honeycutt Oh yeah, I think that people will find it entertaining. Certain um certain age groups will find it more entertaining that the others, I think the older audiences will be disappointed in remembering the older films. I think the newer audiences will be more in tune to it because it’s really geared, it seems to be geared for the Grand Theft Auto generation, so it’s gonna do its business, obviously, it’s just how much business is it gonna do is unclear, but it’s gonna do very very well.
00:27:43 1657	Sound Bite: Kirk Honeycutt Yeah there are, Shia LaBeouf comes on looking a little like Brando in the Wild One, but then he switches to a character on the 77 Sunset Strip, Ed Cookie Burns, who was had a fetish obsession with his comb, and yet he kept pulling out his comb, uh the point the bad guys think he’s pulling out a gun at one point, but there’s a lot of references to his comb that was going to really go over everybody’s, over their head? Well, it’s gonna do something with their head. I just don’t know if people are gonna get it, but I’m sure Steven Spielberg’s saying, you get it you get it, you don’t you don’t. It’s a new generation and its comb, whatever.
00:28:46 1720	Sound Bite: Kirk Honeycutt & Elizabeth Guider Elizabeth – Okay well Kirk has made some incredibly interesting aesthetic judgments on this film, but I have to say after being in Cannes for five days and seeing a lot of very politically charged and socially relevant and you know morally necessary films, it was sort of nice to arrive at the Pallet today and yeah there were crowds, but the sky was blue and we got to see a sort of upbeat movie with bigger than life characters and brightly lit scenes and lots of fun stunts, and animals, I mean monkeys doing things and little creatures and aliens and Russians and all kinds of things, and you know what? Despite myself it was fun, because as a woman, I’m not totally convinced that all women are sitting around waiting, Oh my God I can’t wait to see another installment of the Indiana Jones franchise. It was always a more male skewing kind of event, so as I sat there watching it, I was having fun, and here I would agree with Kirk, I wanted a little more sex or romance or intrigue, or at least have them drink a cup of coffee somewhere and have a little discussion. I mean Harrison Ford is fun to watch, I mean why wouldn’t they ever just slow down?
