Liberating, well for example, if you have a radio mic and sound pack somewhere here, and a cable going here, you are constantly aware of it. You know you can not tape another person here, even if your character feels like it. Whereas here, no radio mics, all boomed, very free to do what you wanted to do. And that was great.

I have so much trust in Steven. I love his work so much and almost every film he does is done in a different way. He is an explorer. He is a very creative person and I probably flatter myself and I tend to think of myself the same way. I like exploring, I like creative challenge. I like going for something that hasn’t been done or hasn’t been done for a long time. Everything new is well forgotten old you know and doing it from the point of view today is…for example, the same with every Shakespeare play. Every next generation discovers something else and it goes true for the film styles as well. The kind of stories for sure.

Since the 40s there was a period of going into very naturalistic stuff which was a great innovation of the time and it influenced me and it keeps evolving. In those days, probably it was more theatrical in the delivery, of the picture, of the image. It was…the audience got a big more sophisticated because people were exposed to so much media these days but in those days not everyone had television so this experience of going to movies was very special and when I saw my first black and white film on the big screen, it was unforgettable. Unforgettable (Talks) Yeah, the funny make up and a different world, you got to go oouu…how do you live there. It is interesting. Very magnetic.

Well I look for the holidays to be over and for someone to offer me a great job. Start working again. I’m always hungry for work, always, always. I can shoot 24 hours a day. (talk) well I’ll certainly do my best.

Yeah, right at the beginning of the process Steven Soderburg sent me and I suppose some of the other actors some of the great classics to look at from the time, to recapture. So it was fun seeing those films.
00:10:32 601.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Beau Bridges
No, coming from a similar place as actors in those days, the good actors were very believable I thought. They seem to have a little more of an edge. Going over the top sometimes. Which I think is fine. I think if you are a character that is not on the screen that much, you can do that almost more because you are kind of hit and run. I enjoyed it.

I loved doing the Fabulous Baker Boys because I got to do it with my brother. That would be one of my main ones. (Talks) It was just the fun of going to work every day with my brother but the story was about brothers and about family, sticking together and all that kind of stuff and I loved the story of it.

Not as an actor because I have been a fan of his for awhile so I thought he was pretty good when it came down to the work. But I also found him to be very well rounded and respectable, very fun to be around, very relaxed, but all about getting the work done. And Steven Soderburgh is the same kind of director so the two of him it was wonderful, a great experience.

Well I wasn’t too aware of it, I mean I saw they were playing it pretty simple but Steven sent us a lot of the old movies to look at, a lot of the classics and so that kind of helped us, the actors, get in the mood.
00:14:00 809.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Beau Bridges
Well I think what happens when you work simply, the movement or whatever happens with the camera, that is that old thing that less is more, you think of that shot in High Noon, supposively one of the first boom shots coming away from that church and Gary Cooper standing there, that is an example of the director knowing when to use technique and it is great.

No I was a little busy, I was right in the middle of releasing Good Night and Good Luck and Syriana while I was shooting so it was a seven day a week job but I’m working on one now. I can’t tell you cause it will blow it but it involves everyone here. Including you.

The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: George Clooney
Are you saying that I am anachronistic, is that what you are saying? Is that what you are trying to say? Old and grey? Old and grey. Same thing. Well its, you got to remember that it is not so much your concern as an actor on set. That is Steven’s. It is his show. Your job is to try to elevate the kind of performance you are doing. I don’t know if you have seen it because it is a heightened kind of energy. It is not,…everything after Montgomery Clift was…as been introspective in the kinds of performances and you have to go back to types of performances they did before that in the kind of films. It was a good portion of the time that Kate and I would sit and stare at each other and say, oh man, this is hard.
00:22:15 1304.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: George Clooney
Well it is funny because the good German has sort of mess with it a little bit (interrupted by Christian Oliver) Christian is so good in this. Lost 1000 pounds to do the movie. You know it is funny, the things you miss about it are sort of the attention to old movie star qualities. What is interesting about this film is that we take a lot of this, for example the camera moves and everything about it, and the focus on it, the lighting and turn it on its ear because it is also about…we do it with a 2006 point of view so you get to change it using a sort of raw sexuality and language so that is what is exciting about this.
00:23:10 1359.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: George Clooney
Well we tried to make it as hard as possible for her but hopefully we achieved that. I don’t know I think we are a pretty welcoming bunch all of us. We have worked together so long and it is not like it is short hand, boys club, don’t…you know you guys can’t participate. I think everybody comes onto those sets hitting the ground running. I never found it to be a closed off experience for anyone that comes in.
00:23:37 1386.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: George Clooney
A Foreign Affair, Humoresque, Mildred Pierce, Out of the Past, a couple other Robert Mitchem films, a couple of other John Garfield films. You know that is what we were looking for just some of the level of…I don’t want to say level of acting because that is the wrong way of saying it, the level of intensity. You know you can’t be laid back in that.
00:24:07 1416.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: George Clooney
No no, I don’t connect with…well I love them but I certainly don’t connect with them as an actor. They are hugely different stylized, wonderful performers but you try to mimic some of the things they were trying to do. You don’t mimic everything they were doing but you mimic some of the things they were doing because it worked so well in that time period.

Oh, there is so many best parts but I think for me it was really inspiring to see it is possible on a level like that, we are talking…it doesn’t get better level than that, that people still have fun and people don’t necessarily have to have egos and for me that was the biggest lesson to take away. Because there were no egos on set whatsoever, at least I didn’t encounter any and that was refreshing to see. Obviously you hear all the stories but on this set it was about the work, and enjoying what we do and I think that is what I wanted to take away from this. To really apply this to whatever other jobs because we don’t always get to work with George Clooney and Kate Blanchett. It would be nice but there are many other movies to come and for me it is just important to take that away. Everyone on the set counts. It is a team effort, a team sport so to think that you are better than anyone else, those guys are definitely top notch and humble and put my feet back down on the ground so I hope that I can stay grounded like that.
00:25:58 1527.67 thumbnail

Oh crazy, I’m ready for some more. Maybe in the sequel, but no. Kate is an amazing human being. I’d say she is one of the greatest actors of our time. I had to pinch myself some of the time and stop drooling cause I was starring at her in the scene but it was really like…she is so real that after the first scene it was like Kate. It wasn’t like wow…it was just accepting that I am one of them now and it was fun to be one of them for that time and they all let me in and all accepted me for who I was. It wasn’t like…it was like a blank sheet. I like that.
00:26:50 1579.67 thumbnail

I think everyone knows she is a great mom. The kids were running around it was awesome to see that, to see family. That is what it is all about. I don’t think there are any surprises. You know, not public person, she keeps it all in, I love it. But there is no great secrets that I know, but maybe I’ll find out tonight, I’ll let you know.

Christmas, I still can’t get used to it, palm trees, Christmas, still trying to catch on the year has went by so fast but my parents are here, my mom, my father came out from Germany and my sister, I can’t wait to see my sister, I’m going back to Germany so I’m going home for Christmas and do it the way your suppose to do it, with snow. I mean for me I’m going to go home, see friends and go skiing. Enjoy Christmas with the family.

I think it was am…for me to watch, because we have all know them, we all have watched them, but to really watch them and go back to revisit them was amazing to see how black and white picks up, there are grays, there are shades, there is shadows and how they all worked with that. It was great to see them recapture that, all of that. Then when you see Kate Blanchett, I mean she recaptures this whole thing. I mean she could be out of that era. For me it was breathtaking to be apart of that and an experience to be in a black and white movie like that. It felt like it was 1945.
00:29:18 1727.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Cate Blanchett
Well I think a lot of times, and a lot in Babel, is the sense that the camera will find your performance. And with this process with Steven, it was very much about being front footed and deflametory and you finding the camera. That you really had to reach out. So the relationship to the camera is a little more theatrical than it is conventionally in film but I love that.
00:29:45 1754.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Cate Blanchett
Every day was a highlight, every day, every minute. I can smell him on the red carpet somewhere over there.
00:29:58 1767.67 thumbnail

Steven complied a selection of films and that included some Jimmy Cagney films, Joan Crawford films, Marlene Dietrich, Ingred Burgman, I looked to a lot of Hildgard Neff. And Notorious a lot, Mary Louise Renia. And I also looked at Bette Davis just because I love her.

I think the highlight was actually getting the job. I screen tested on a Friday and I got a call Monday morning. And you know generally in the world of film, and television, weeks will go by, months will go by and you will be asked to come in and test in front of more executives and somebody wants to see you be funnier and someone wants you to be handsomer. Friday afternoon I went in, Monday morning I got the call and it is such a vote of conference from a great director and I have worked with some amazing directors and at this point to work with Steven Soderburgh was a dream come true.
00:32:27 1916.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Leland Orser
He is so sexy. What’s a surprise, nothing surprised me about him. He is a lovely wonderful caring good guy and he is good to act with and supportive and when we were working together, he was promoting good night and Good Luck and Syriana at the same time, he was nominated for like 50 academy awards and he would fly to London and be back in time for a call time on Thursday, and be gone again on Friday be back on Monday. And you know, never missed a beat and banged out an amazing performance.
00:33:10 1959.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Leland Orser
Absolutely yeah. I feel like I am repeating myself all over the place here but I will. You know we were asked to act like that. He wanted to replicate a movie from the forties so we were told the acting is not post acting. The acting…Montgomery Clifton and Marlon Brando have not come along yet. You are doing here, a studio actor, your acting is presentational, theatrical, heightened, big. And you question yourself. You think you are looking like a totally ass doing it but when you see it in the film it all works.
00:33:52 2001.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Leland Orser
I think so, you know it is black and white so your acting is black and white as well. Everything is extreme here. The lighting is extreme, the sound is extreme so it is the same with the acting.
00:34:07 2016.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Leland Orser
Casablanca, Maltese Falcon, Humoresque, one that I have never seen with John Garfield and Joan Crawford doing glasses acting. Amazing you know she clearly didn’t need the glasses but she acted the hell out of them. And John Garfield I just loved, amazing guy.
00:34:33 2042.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Leland Orser
The high moral ground I think you found in a lot of those films and it is very difficult to find in this film. It is like Casablanca in that everybody, nobody remains untouched by it. Everyone buckles under the pressure of this atrocious, horrible time. It is three days after the war. Millions and millions of people have been extinguished. Berlin is in shambles. You see the rear screen projection stuff and it looks like Falujjah. It looks like Baghdad. You forget the reality of that that this love story plays in front of.
00:35:16 2085.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Leland Orser
Snow, which we are not going to get here. I think we are going to go…I hear there is a wonderful skating rink out in Pasadena. I think we are going to do that. We got our Christmas tree yesterday. I got a four and a half year old boy so we start things early. My wife loves Christmas. 106..whatever the radio station is on in all of our cars so we are deeply into Christmas at this point.

Borat! Very Christmasy
00:36:14 2143.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Tobey Maguire
Well I love the kind of feel and pacing of the old kind of murder mystery, noir films and how it relates to this movie, just conceptually I think it is very bold that Steven wanted to make a movie like this now. So it was really exciting thing to be a part of it.
00:36:44 2173.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Tobey Maguire
Well it doesn’t affect me that much. I guess we were suppose to project more because we were pretty much using boom mics and not the wireless mics you clip on so I guess it had to do with projection and the acting style is suppose to be a little more presentational as to fit with that era.
00:37:16 2205.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Tobey Maguire
I felt very comfortable. I think this is their sixth film together. That and you know, they made me feel very comfortable. (no hazing?) No no, I didn’t get no pranks, anything like that. Everything was okay.
00:37:44 2233.67 thumbnail
The Good German Premiere – Sound bite: Tobey Maguire
Unusual. Well I think he has got great vision. You know telling his story through cinema. I think he has a unique gift for it.
