When I first met Samuel Jackson I was a casting director in New York City at NET, gave him his first acting job when he came to New York, I didn’t know it was his first, but I had to go somewhere, and he came in the office and I said, “Are you good?” and he said, “Yeah”, I said, “Are you’re sure your good?”, he said, “Yeah.” I said, “You got the part”, cause I had to catch a plane, he knew it was the instinct, it was my instinct that picked out his talent and I knew, he would be one of the ones.

Coming from a producer, I would say, “I’ll be your friend even you produce strange movies, and don’t include me in ‘em.” Um, he has a good eye, he has a good eye, he knows people very well
OC: Ok,
Anna: and I think that is, he has a good instinct for it.

Let me just remind everyone he has a memory that is so good, oh God, it’s unbelievable, first of all to remember that many lines in that many movies in one year, you need a talent, but, um, he remembers most relationships and most people that he meets which is really a talent, because if you got strange with him 10 years ago, he’ll say, “Is that the person who wouldn’t talk to me when I came up and said to so and so, he does do that, he does, so, if you didn’t like him back then, don’t try to kiss up to him now, naw he remembers he holds grudges, you know, he’s a good guy, he’s just happy, all he ever wanted to do was act.

La Tanya: Pulp Fiction.
OC: Pulp Fiction, why?
La Tanya: It was the movie that put him on the map, for me in my mind, in what I thought his chops were about, I said, you got it you can do it.
OC: When did you realize you made it? You’re a star.
Samuel: I don’t know, I never think that, um I’m always wondering if this is the last movie, am ever going to do unless I know what the next job is right behind it, so it’s still that actor nervousness that goes on, you know, but at a certain point it was good to know that, I had a team of people around me, that would present me with opportunities to work in and I can make a choice and if I said, “I want to do this,” then I got a chance to go to work and not to have and audition anymore, it gave me a sense of security but in these economic times, who knows if there ever will be another movie again.

Sound Bite: Samuel L. Jackson – American Cinematheque Award/Honoree, with his wife La Tanya Richardson.
Samuel: I hope, I always question sometimes if I’ve done enough, or the things that I’ve done are important enough that merit something like this happening, and then you kind of have to let it go and go I guess that I have done something’s that are significant and that I made an impact in the business, I have a fan base that goes to see my movies, that like what I do, and I guess I have done a significant amount of work but I haven’t finished the things I want to do, but hopefully I will continue even after this

Samuel: I’m actually looking for people, who has a good track record in Television, that know what there doing in terms of being show runners of hit show before, and who have had shows run for a long time, people that know the dynamics of a television show and how to create a show that has a life that runs for several seasons and not just one season and goes away, which will in turn mean that they will find the talent that makes that show work and will except my input in terms what I like as a television viewer and how I feel about television historically and see if we can use that input to make something work

I have no advice for Sam Jackson, who could possibly have advice for Sam Jackson, he has probably done more movies, than movies, that makes no sense, Sam has done more movies than anybody I know, so he knows more about producing than anyone I know, absolutely I have no advice except to hire me, that would be my advice.

Um, I don’t know I mean, producing it challenging, but I know, he’s up for it, he’s very professional, very knowledgeable, he’s been around a lot to know what needs to be done.
01:26:57 1491.33 thumbnail
Sound Bite: George Lucas – Producer
I don’t know, he knows talent very well, cause he’s been around it all the time, he knows a good actor from bad actor, and at the same time he knows writing, because he has to say those words.
01:29:29 1643.33 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Rick Nicita – Chairman – American Cinematheque
We try to have it as a mid career award rather than a life time achievement award, and frankly there seems to be a lot of the same list of people that who are kind of reflectively thought of, and when we realized that Samuel L. Jackson has not received an award of this stature it seem like a great omission and we wanted to reactive that.
01:30:16 1690.33 thumbnail

Follow the same instincts that he’s been doing as an Actor, follow what he believes in, and get it done.
01:31:14 1748.33 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Geoffrey Gilmore – Director Sundance Film Festival
I think it’s fabulous we’ve had him up at Sundance before and I think he wonderfully, wonderfully deserves, he’s one of those actors that crosses back and fourth and does a wonderful job.
01:31:34 1768.33 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Geoffrey Gilmore – Director Sundance Film Festival
You know, these days production is a much more complicated business, than it used to be, and he’s the kind of guy who’s aware of that, he’s been in a lot of different complicated productions, we’ll see how it works, we’ve got international, it’s much more complicated, international money, getting distribution, you know the old days are gone, big changes

Well, I’m truly excited because both Cookie and I, first of all we live across the street from each other and then Cookie and La Tanya are best of friends and Sam and I enjoy sports and everything, so this is great because of our friend but also because he is an incredible actor and person and father and husband, I’m just blown away by, I watch him on the screen and I know him, but I don’t, you know, he get’s into character so well it’s amazing, his talent is truly amazing.
01:37:35 2129.33 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Magic Johnson – Former NBA All Star Los Angeles Lakers with wife Cookie
You know I really couldn’t give him any advice, he’s a pro and he will come out with good content and we will be happy to play it for him and I think that Sam has been in the business long enough to know what the audience wants and I can tell just to “do Sam” the projects that he loves and likes he should put them out there and I think that when you’re a winner and you’ve been a winner your whole career you’ll win at that as well.
