Sound Bite: Kevin Lima – Working with Amy Adams
You know what? I feel, I feel really blessed that that woman walked into an audition. Because I looked at a whole bunch of girls. A lot of girls to find Amy. And she walked in and she looks like a Disney princess, you know, I thought, “Wow, look at her. Hopefully she understands how to do this.” And she didn’t place any judgment on the character when she was playing the role. And I knew, okay, we have a movie now, we have a movie because this woman is phenomenal. (Talks) She lives in the skin, and she’s not embarrassed of it, you know. She doesn’t think it’s ridiculous. Which was wonderful. It’s what the role really needed. And then I built the whole cast around her once I had cast her. |

Sound Bite: Kevin Lima – The most difficult part of making this movie
You know what? It… (Talks) Every day was a new challenge. Every day. Um, just when you think you you you’d got a hold of the movie and you knew what you were doing, then you’d have to go to central park and do a big song number. That was, if I had to pick one thing, the central park song was probably the most difficult thing to do because there were so many people, so many moving parts, dealing with crowds, you know, of spectators. It was just uh, it was just rough. |

Sound Bite: Kevin Lima – New York City
Well… Well what’s interesting about New Yorkers is when we were in uh like time square especially, they ignored us. They totally just ignored us. And I wanted people to pay attention. You know, I have Disney characters running around the center of New York, so… Oh well. You get what you get. Um I wanted to, I wanted to portray sort of like a fairy tale of New York in a sense. You know, so I didn’t go after the hardest elements, you know, the grittiest, most depressing elements of being in New York, because I wanted… This is a fairy tale after all. A modern day fairy tale. |

Sound Bite: Kevin Lima – The part of the princess
Oh yeah. I I I think it’s great that that a that a princess. This is part of what the story’s all about. It’s about holding on to who you are and grabbing your, your happily ever after. I think this is a nice alternative, in a sense, to Snow White. It embraces Snow White but gives you an alternative version. |

Sound Bite: Kevin Lima – Bringing animation and live action together
I think what made the the the movie, I wouldn’t say easy, but easier for me, is that I have a background in animation. And it made it possible for me to embrace these elements, like Pip, Pip being in the real world. I just embraced it and said, ok this is possible. Because I could plan out everything Pip was gonna do with the actors. I could share that with them. Um, yeah, I’d do something like this again in a second. Really. |

Sound Bite: Kevin Lima – Doing the voice of Pip
It is. It is true. When Pip comes to New York and he, he loses his voice and he does all those little squeaks, that’s me. I’m doin those, “Hello (Squeeking voice).” That’s all me. Ha ha I know, I know. |

Sound Bite: Kevin Lima – Being a director
Um. You you you know what? It’s a joy to be able to do what I do. It’s it’s hard work. You know, every day you wake up and you go, “Okay, here’s the new challenge.” But, at the end of the day when you’ve made it, you feel really proud that that you’ve actually accomplished what you’ve set out to do. |

Sound Bite: Kevin Lima – Watching the film with an audience
Yeah I’ve watched it. It’s, you know what, it’s so nice to watch, watch the film and have audiences react in a positive way. And especially to stand outside afterwards and have them exit the theater, and they’re singing, and laughing, and talking, and to have a movie affect you in that manner I think is a is a great joy. You don’t get a lot of movies now days that that lift your spirit in that way. |
