Sound Bite: Dustin Hoffman – Have you seen a lot of these movies?
I got too many kids. (talking) I have too many children. (talking) Well it’s the first animated film I ever did. (talking) Which is (talking) Is that what it’s called cause I don’t even know, no I don’t. (talking) No, I haven’t I swear I haven’t uhm by the time I, we have six kids, uh by the time uh the last one left the house, she’s 20 a few years ago uh this stuff wasn’t coming up when they were little, you know. So I didn’t have to go see them.

Sound Bite: Dustin Hoffman –What was the motivation to take on this role?
I never done it before so you kind of want to, in my stage try what you’ve never done. I know Jeffery Katzenburg who’s one of the heads of Deamworks, we had done a film together he had produced it years ago, he approached me about this, he said just come in these are first rate guys, they’ve been working on this for a couple of years, they had spent 2, 3 years working on it before they meet the actors and then when you do it it’s another four years I mean it’s pain staking work he said they’re artists and explained the character and I saw, you know, you either see a way in or you don’t, I thought I saw a way into the character.

Sound Bite: Dustin Hoffman – They film you when you are in the booth right?
It’s not really a booth, it’s just room, they’re they’re in a booth you look at you know beyond the glass they’re in a sound proof room the director, the producer, and the writers and you just have a mic and they direct you in way that I found offensive. (talking) And so I got used to it, I, you have to put yourself in their hands, but you feel like a beginning actor with those first acting classes when the teachers didn’t really know what they were doing. Say it again and emphasize this word, say it louder, say it softer, you know what I’m saying, and you say you know geez I can’t work this way and they say okay do it your way and you don’t know how to do it because it’s it’s you know it’s all being thought up as they, they have the script but it’s in a sense an outline that they are constantly changing. So you say to yourself I am going to put myself in their hands and I’m going to do the best I can and I had uh with the caviet, with the agreement that I can do over what I want to if I you know, I heard that Mike Meyers had re-done Shrek after he saw it. And I was surprised at how little I had to do. (talking) Yeah they know their stuff. These guys uh that did this film.

Sound Bite: Dustin Hoffman – Did you see nuances of you in the character?
I, no I didn’t and two of my kids saw the film when I saw it and they said my god dad it’s you I said what are you talking about, I’m not a little mousy looking man. No the body language the way he puts his hands behind his back your facial, cause they film you when you’re doing this in a room and then they give the film to the animators when you are working in the, just doing the voice but you’re trying to act, and the animators take on your body language so I compare it to uh if you hear yourself in the tape recorder you say that’s not me. That doesn’t sound like me and your friends say that sounds like you, no it doesn’t I don’t sound like that and you feel that way, at least I do when I see this character I, however I think Jack Black, the little I’ve gotten to know him is that Panda I see, that relationship I see very clearly.
