If I were trapped in a novel, which one would it be… it would probably be Memoirs of a Geisha because I think that period in, it’s such a romance, it’s such a fantasy in that time period, and also the concepts of like the cultural concepts of Japan and just the people it’s so fascinating, so I think that would be, yeah…

My favorite fantasy film of all time is probably, hmm, God I can’t remember the name of it, it was when I was a boy uh and it was one of Frank Oz’s films, something of the stone, I can’t remember the name of it, I’m so sorry.

In a novel? I wouldn’t be trapped in a novel, I don’t read novels, I’m useless with books. However, my favorite childhood book is Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak and if I could be trapped in that book and be Max floating away in the ocean to where the wild things are, I’d be a very very happy boy.

I hate fantasy films. (talks) I’m a very big fan of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. I love that, and Pan’s Labyrinth which has a big elephant, big elephant? What the fuck’s going on tonight. Big element of fantasy, Pan’s Labyrinth was phenomenal, yeah.
07:08:19 246.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Cornelia Funke
Why I would want to be in a novel? I think I would like to be in The Once and Future King by TH White, it’s the Camelot story, the author, yeah but I would like to be a man in that because the women you don’t have much fun there, yes.

Um of all time, oh that’s difficult. The Lord of the Rings I think. (talks) Yes I think so. First part. First part.

Um I mean it’s almost like what part of this film wouldn’t make you want to be a part of it. It’s got an incredible cast, an incredible director, an amazing book that it’s based on, and the plot, the character I loved. Every part of it was something that I, we shot six weeks in Italy into these incredible places and it was just it was amazing and we sort of became like a little family of cast and crew.

Uh I think if I went into a novel I’d always kind of want to take it back from it because I never want to be stuck anywhere, but I don’t know, maybe like uh one of those, maybe Jane Austen novel like Pride and Prejudice where they have like incredible like bulls with like amazing dresses and you don’t get stuff like that anymore, so maybe uh…
07:11:59 467.67 thumbnail
Sound Bite: Eliza Bennett
Ooh I don’t know. Fantasy film. I’m always a fan of the Harry Potters, I always watch every one that comes out. I don’t know it’s like Harry Potter, Twilight, I love them all, I go and watch everything.

I really loved the basis of the story, about the power of reading the characters out of a book, and to see and the challenge of being able to play a character that exists in the world of a book and how to manifest that as a character in this world and that was quite an interesting acting challenge really.

The Karma Sutra.

Can’t say Lord of the Rings, okay. Uh I suppose, does Sci-Fi count? I loved Close Encounters, Close Encounters of the Third Kind um I remember seeing that when I was about 13, 14 and it about blew my mind, you know I just thought it was great.

B-Roll – Inkheart Premiere – wide of premiere, Sienna Guillory

Um apart from the cast and the director, um for me the script was incredible. I mean it was a story where the good guys win, the bad guys lose but it’s where your dreams can come true, it’s about the power of stories, and I think people are afraid to read books sometimes that are well known because they are going to be hard work and I think the great thing about a famous book or a book that is really well known is that they fly off the page and they become bigger than the real world and I think if it gets anyone to pick up a book then that’s great. But escapism is healthy.

Well, to defeat bad guys, okay. Want to take one of my light sabers? You know what? I’m going to go work for Han Solo. What? Oh by the way I just got hired to work with Harrison Ford, cool! Look at me, I’m turning into one of my kids. This is weird. {Laughs} Don’t tell anyone. We’re doing this picture called Crowley, gonna work with Harrison. I’m really pleased about this because it’s a biopic um I think maybe the Crowley family might be here tonight, I know I invited them. Oh that is great. I don’t want to talk to you anymore, I want to go see them. Um the uh Inkheart is a good movie, come see it. those of you that have read the book that it’s a best seller, so is the second and third, I think, came to my attention by the author, her name is Cornelia Funke, you might have already seen her walk the line. She wrote me a really nice inscription years ago, it said, “Dear Brendan, thank you for inspiring the character.” And I thought hang on, what? This doesn’t happen every day in your career life, I Bennett you can read it to your kids one day. So I quickly read the book and i thought and ?, and thankfully it was really really good. The substance of what I thought should be made into a screenplay and therefore into a movie. It’s not that easy, but you know we pulled our sleeves up, put the cast together, got an amazing director and so here we are now. So anyway, so the thing is about this story is um the character I play is Mortimer, he’s a book binder by trade, he’s in search of his wife who somehow disappeared when he was reading to his daughter one night from a book called Inkheart which has elements of fantasy from a medieval world. Knights, dragons, good guys, bad guys, fairytales, water sprites, the whole nine yards. But there’s a tradeoff. Anytime we read aloud it comes to life and something disappears. But I don’t want to give too much away about it. for those fo you who know the novel and have already read it or have dared to read it to your kids, come see the picture and see how we faired. Does anyone have any questions? Or I’ll just filibuster for awhile.

You know you are talking to the guy who was George of the Jungle before had kids. (talks) Let me think about this. Lately, you know what, um I think that I make films because I love to because I’m fortunate enough to have found what I really enjoy to do and there’s always something to do, and I love going to movies that are good that you don’t walk away feeling like you want your ten bucks and two hours back and I can say that because I made a few of those and I know that a satisfying experience at the movies with however whomever you consider your family is a positive experience. And you know what if they’re age appropriate great, there are other films that I’ve made that when kids grow a little bit older I’ll show them that work or they’ll find it themselves. In the end I don’t know if I’m an actor that idles very well so I’m happy to keep my hands and feet busy.
