Sound Bite: Scarlett Johansson
(Is it interesting to look back at old Hollywood)
I always like to watch, I mean its fun to have different kinds of film references and stuff like that and I I have been a fan of the noir genre. I mean I’ve liked those (?? Falcon and Third Man and some of those films are too cops and robbers for me and I like some of the more mellow-dramatic kind of Betty Davis type movies. But its fun to revisit that and I’ve read a lot of you know about that period in Hollywood which I always find to be fascinating because its so different today

(looked like your character was played out of the 40’s was it intentional?)
Well the character is you know James in the book makes reference to you know her chest of cashmere sweaters and stuff like that so you know the characters very glamorous and of course she has got to maintain this appearance of everything being absolutely perfect you know so you just don’t know what’s exactly wrong but you get the sense that there’s something there you know. So we wanted to make everything just as perfect as can be with the apron and the perfect hair style and all those things, it was fun.

(Difficult breaking into the business then and now)
Yeah I mean its just its absolutely a one and a million shot I mean I feel constantly unbelievably lucky at how successful and how much opportunity that I have, you know I have tons of friends who are incredibly talented and I watched them struggle all the time with film and music you know there both very very difficult to break into.

(Did you know who the director attached was)
Well I had known that Brian was casting a film with two female leads or two female rules and I have always wanted to work with Brian. I mean I’ve admired him for so long so I read the script and I was very attracted to the character of Kay, just her kind of will to survive and dynamic between her and both her and josh’s character I thought would be interesting so I met with him and tried to convince him that I could play this character that in the book I mean I’m completely physically wrong for this character and I was really lucky that he could kind of see past me not being a six foot tall red head with athletic build or whatever (talks) yeah she’s so great in it I think it’s one of her best performances really and you know it was it was a really wonderful collaborative film you know and just to be able to work with Brian who’s you no an auteur. I mean you can look at a film and go hey that’s like a Brian De Palma film you know. To be able to really work on a film with him and see how works and she how passionate he is about what he does. It’s inspiring you know it really is.
