Well I had known a little bit about it but it’s when you start doing the homework that you really go deep and it’s not really till you talk to the real people, people who have been there in all different aspects. People that had been working for NGO’s people that have been smugglers, people that had been mercenaries, that’s actually when you actually get a more textured layer on understanding what happened. |

You know I just want to try to make great movies and sometimes in a great movie it has a size or it has the capacity to also hold great themes and in this case the notion of what is valuable and the idea of the exploitation of the resources of the third world is a great theme (talks) Well that’s what you have to do, unless I do that I’m not going to get the butts in the seats, nobody’s going to give a damn if I’m just doing something political, it’s gotta entertainment. (talks) it’s increasingly rare, it didn’t use to be so rare in the late 1960’s in the 1970’s it was a pretty common place actually. |

It’s just complete commitment, talent that goes without saying. But believe it or not there’s a certain ease, it’s not a huge drama and a trial everyday to try to figure how to do things, there’s a certain journeymen like quality, a certain understanding. He’s been doing it a very long time now, he’s only thirty two but he’s done it since he was a very young boy. So it’s in his nature to just get out there and do the work. (talks) I have had real problems at different times with people who somehow make the drama about them rather then putting it on the screen and it’s just very boring, but some of the great ones are not like that. I’ve worked more with people who are professional then with people that are full of themselves. (talks) I think that they don’t use all there energy trying to somehow create a sort of vortex around themselves instead it goes on the screen. |

I mean you know you’re far away from the traditional comforts and info structures, there’s you know there’s heat and water and animals and bugs and you know that’s a lot to deal with. (talks) yeah although we were in New Zealand which is you know in some sense a more comfortable place then certain parts of Africa. |
