Sound Bite: Gil Kenan – on Comic-Con phenomenon
It’s amazing, I actually just saw a few minutes of a panel downstairs, like I’m really happy that I’m doing a panel this year. We did a, sort of um, we did a this amazing kind of a panel on wheels on the way here. We got 2 old pullman train cars, hitched them to the back of an Amtrak line from LA down to Comic-Con and I screened about 20 minutes of the movie and it’s a lot easier to handle a train car full of people than 50,000 whatever people in a hall. But um yeah I’m really happy to be here.

Sound Bite: Gil Kenan – on resonating
Well I mean this is pure science fiction, I mean big ideas that a sort of dystopian future. In many ways it’s a post apocalyptic children’s film, we have a story where our town our setting is a sort of incubator, a way to keep humanity safe for hundreds of years until conditions on our surface become habitable, but someone loses the instruction manual. And as the film opens the place is dying, falling apart. You know some big science fiction ideas.

Sound Bite: Gil Kenan
Yeah well um I had kind of my dream cast for this film. Saoirse Ronan plays Lina Mayfleet the star of the hero and uh our co-hero is Doon played by Harry Treadaway, both of them real brilliant energetic, characters with a kind of real depth of soul. Bill Murray plays the mayor of the town, getting to work with him is sort of a high water mark in my uh in my nascent career. Tim Robbins, Martin Landau, Tobey Jones, on and on, it’s like I sort of close my eyes and imagine who the right actor is for the role and because of the strength of the screenplay that Caroline Thompson wrote, they uh ended up on set.

Sound Bite: Scott Derrickson – Comic-Con phenomenon
It’s unbelievable. It’s mayhem. It’s my first time, I’ve never been here before, and uh the energy level here is something to behold. And it’s great energy, very positive energy, energy coming from fans of comics and genre filmmaking and extreme storytelling and no one’s ashamed of it, it’s great.

Sound Bite: Scott Derrickson – fan of any superheroes?
I’m a big fan of superheroes, I read superhero comics to my 4 year old every night um he’s into Iron Man and the Hulk right now so that’s a big part of my every day routine actually.

Sound Bite: Scott Derrickson – pressure remaking this film
Yeah I mean of course you have to if you don’t feel that pressure then you’re doing something wrong I think. Um you have to have the good reasons to remake a movie as good as The Day the Earth Stood Still and I think that we had them that this is a story, a new audience is ready for, a lot of people haven’t seen before, and we’ve updated it with some good visual effects technology and some good thematic ideas I think.

In: 00.13.24 Out: 00.13.39
Sound Bite: Scott Derrickson – resonating question
What do I think is going to resonate with them? I think that you know the telling of the story the telling Klaatu’s story, it’s Klaatu’s and it’s ? and it’s the day the earth stood still I mean what’s better than that?

Sound Bite: Jennifer Connelly, Keanu Reeves – resonating question
Reeves – Hmm I would say the story, I know it’s a broad answer but I think I think probably looking at ourselves maybe the character of people, the guess I okay, the alien, there’s an alien coming to earth probably like that and the relationships.
Connelly – Yeah I mean I think it’s a movie that I mean I responded to it almost on a gut level and I thought it was um really interesting, I thought it had a lot of heart to it, I read the script I thought it was moving, I thought it was timely I thought it was responsible, I thought it was interesting to you know, here comes a character from another place um who’s looking at human beings and how we treat each other and how we talk to each other how we live on the earth, and I thought it was I thought it was just a valuable way to spend time and all that sort of wrapped up in an entertaining movie somehow.

I think it’s great, I think it’s about time that um my fellow nerds got some attention um I think it’s great I think fanboys are really loyal fans and I think that people you know respect it.

Mark was great. I don’t think you had the chance to interview him, but he’s great, really sweet guy, very much of a professional I had a great time.

In: 00.17.05 Out: 00.17.21
Sound Bite: Mila Kunis – new skills?
Yes I had to learn how to shoot a gun, and uh I had to learn how shoot an automatic and I had to learn how to kick people’s ass with a billy club. So let me tell you, much harder than you think. That billy club and I were fighting and it won a couple times.

Sound Bite: Ludacris – phenom of Comic-Con
What do I feel, it’s great I mean all the fans here it’s like it basically takes it back to the essence if it weren’t for these people then none of this would be happening anyway, so we’re kind of just reaching back, understanding that we gotta satisfy these fan’s hunger and that’s what we’re doing.
00:18:07 1056.23 thumbnail
In: 00.18.07 Out: 00.18.28
Sound Bite: Ludacris – fanboy?
Man I’m a fan of Max Payne the video game and the movie, that’s what I’m a fan of. You know that and RocknRolla are both comin out on the same date, October 17th so I don’t know how that happened coincidentally 2 movies are coming out in October and an album coming 4 days later, so Mr. October is the new name.
00:18:29 1078.23 thumbnail
In: 00.18.29 Out: 00.18.51
Sound Bite: Ludacris – new skills?
Any new skills? You know this is my first time playing a police officer of sorts so with that being said you know I kinda had to learn a couple things, you know some gun handling besides the sloppy way I may have done it before, so just trying to be more um organized with it and that nature the same way a police officer would do.

Phenomenon of Comic-Con, it’s pretty crazy. It’s pretty awesome. It’s a whole new world for me.
00:19:41 1150.23 thumbnail
In: 00.19.41 Out: 00.20.10
Sound Bite: Mark Wahlberg - resonating
Well I know the movie is awesome, I think uh you know if they’re worried about you know the game and staying true to the game well they don’t have to worry about that anymore. The story is definitely the same, um and I just think you know I think I have the edge that is able to pull off a character like that you know and I don’t feel like that about all the characters so this is but this is something I immediately identified with and that I could bring something interesting to the table playing the part.
00:20:12 1181.23 thumbnail
In: 00.20.12 Out: 00.20.31
Sound Bite: Mark Wahlberg
No I know how to shoot anybody any way I want, you know, I’ve done a lot of that so, but you know learning my lines, being prepared, and being in that head space, it’s a dark place to go so you go there on day one and I stayed there until it’s over and then I want my life back.

In: 00.21.01 Out: 00.21.31
Sound Bite: Hugh Jackman
No man I’m so jazzed after going out there with those fans I mean I’ve waited 8 years to bring Wolverine to Comic-Con. I’ve been here once before with Van Helsing and it was really hard because at the panel for Van Helsing every question that was asked was about Wolverine, so I was kind of like you know looking down the panel so to come here and really say thank you to the fans and the creator of Wolverine who is in the audience today, who I hadn’t met, was awesome, it was just great.
00:21:35 1264.23 thumbnail
In: 00.21.35 Out: 00.22.16
Sound Bite: Hugh Jackman – what made him want to do another film
At the time when I got off of Wolverine it was the first job I had in Hollywood so I probably would have done it no matter what I thought of it but the truth is it’s easy, I reckon he’s one of the great comic book characters around I mean he’s actually 3 dimensional. I wouldn’t have done a 4th, I wouldn’t have done a Wolverine movie if I didn’t have this great script from David Benioff and it hadn’t been I thought a reason to keep exploring, you know he’s really a great character and that’s the bottom line I had an absolute blast doing it and uh the moment I stop enjoying it I’ll stop or maybe the fans will tell me to stop, one of the 2.

In: 00.25.14 Out: 00.25.54
Sound Bite: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Carla Gugino, Andy Fickman
Gugino – Oh wow, just a bunch of people getting together who love movies and who are really knowledgable, I think that’s what’s so cool, is that we’re seeing so much, so often people know the source material better than you even do and I’m always a stickler for someone has attention to detail and I love that people come and they dress up and they embrace the entire thing and they are here to see what is about to come out movie wise and you know it’s a very exciting very visceral and like we were saying it’s so not a stuffy event which makes it so fun because you get to be with the people who watch, we do this work and we get to share it, that’s why we do it to share it with fans.
00:25:54 1523.23 thumbnail
In: 00.25.54 Out: 00.27.12
Sound Bite: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Carla Gugino, Andy Fickman – resonate question
Johnson – I think what’s gonna resonate with the fans is uh the great combination of some great kick ass action and great comedy and great and the authenticity in terms of the UFO experience. You know there’s not a more perfect director than Andy coming from his background, his knowledge, the history, not that he was ever uh taken away and probed or anything like that, but the fact that.
Fickman – But maybe.
Johnson – But maybe tonight. You know again, he was perfect for it, born in Roswell, and has a really extensive knowledge and love by the way for UFO and its history.
Gugino – And also character.
Fickman – You can speak on that, by the way.
Gugino – I mean I think people really relate to character, I mean people you want to invest into characters, you’re in the midst of this great action adventure and you have these great characters that interact with each other and are put in a position of you know what if I said to you know I’m an alien and it was actually true, so that is something that’s just you know it’s a pretty wild experience.
Fickman – it’s a passionate group of people that came together to make this movie and even though we just wrapped and we come out in march we’re passionately wanting to get the message out now and want people to know we just we think they’ll have a great time if they come out and plop down in a seat when the movie opens.
