Phifer – Yeah open casting call. (Talks) My first time acting, yeah. First time auditioning hahahahaha (Talks).
Leal – Inspiring. So inspiring. (Talks) No I didn’t know that. I knew that was his first thing, but I didn’t realize how it went down, no, that’s incredible.
Sound Bite: Mekhi Phifer & Sharon Leal – Phifer on getting the film made.
Phifer – Well I knew Preston, and uh I and we had, you know, I’ve known him for a few years and uh he called me and said look I’ve got this script, I really want you to be in this movie, and you know my schedule’s so crazy, so I went home, read it, loved it, called Clint, called Pepper, and uh said “look I really want to be a part of this and help you put this whole thing together. I think this is a really special project and think that my film company could be an asset to you guys.” So uh we said, “Come on, let’s do it,” and uh, we just went up and running with it.
Sound Bite: Mekhi Phifer & Sharon Leal – Leal on working with such a great cast.
Leal – It’s incredible, it’s great, it’s, I mean, it’s just not too long ago, I’m, you know, watching a DVD of Soul Food, and I’m like, “Oh, Mekhi Phifer,” and you know, Regina King, you know, it’s just incredible to be all of a sudden, you know, face-to-face with these people that I’ve admired their work over the years. So I’m having the time of my life. I’m really humbled to be working with them, and it’s really been fun.
Sound Bite: Mekhi Phifer & Sharon Leal – The improvised dance scene at the end of the film
Phifer – Yeah we we uh, just called everybody one day and said come on let’s do this uh soul train line.
Leal – Yeah, it wasn’t even in the script. It was just like, we’re gonna do this, is everybody down, and it was like, “Yeah, sure.” Haha.
Sound Bite: Mekhi Phifer & Sharon Leal – Leal on family
Leal – I have a very big extended family, absolutely. And you know, like most people, um, we all gather together you know that one day out of the year and uh we get all kinds of drama and different personalities and that’s you know a universal thing I think that everyone can relate to. A lot of times it’s about getting through Christmas, not necessarily you know having the most perfect holiday ever. It never is. Um, but, you know, um, but we’ve managed to get together again the following year, so we must be doing something right, and, you know, it is family. That’s what this movie’s about, so…
Sound Bite: Mekhi Phifer & Sharon Leal – Phifer on
Phifer – A little stressful? Ha! Gotta spend a bunch of money… (talks) Right, right, right. Well, you know, with ER, you know, especially in the past five years or so, um, you know, we always go down for Christmas, you know, as far as the show. And uh so I get to go back to New York which I really get to do so I get to see everyone, uh, so it’s really not that stressful, you know. Um, uh, you know, my mom does, I give her money and my lady so they do all the shopping so I don’t have to do any of that nonsense. Um, so I don’t have to get stressed out by that at all, and I love New York in the wintertime, so it’s actually pretty enjoyable. (talks)
Leal – I have, of course, I lived there for several years. Yes.
Sound Bite: Mekhi Phifer & Sharon Leal – on the writer and the base for the story.
Phifer – Yeah I think he did definitely base this on his family. Um (Talks). Yeah, yeah, and with obviously, you know, based on…
Leal – Loosely based.
Phifer – Loosely based. Yeah, you know, but, you know, uh, he just did a great job.
Sound Bite: Mekhi Phifer & Sharon Leal – Leal on mothers during the holidays.
Leal – Right, I mean, it’s just like she’s got however many days like three days to figure out what’s going on in your life and so a lot of times you’re just like “ma” you know, that’s mothers for you, they’re just like “what’s happening” and everybody’s trying to catch up you know a year’s worth of life you might’ve missed out on and it’s just kinda cramming everything into a few days home for the holidays. So, definitely, yeah.
Sound Bite: Mekhi Phifer & Sharon Leal
Phifer – They are talking about it, you know. We haven’t, you know, heard the word yet, I mean, we still getting pretty uh pretty good ratings, you know, uh, so we’ll just have to see what they decide and you know what they wanna do. (Talks) Yeah, yeah, exactly. And that’s why, you know, it’s a great show, and we have a good time.
