Sound Bite: Tom Arnold
I based it on you know uh originally as written it’s a racist white guy from a rich neighborhood and that didn’t fly for me because you know uh it’s 1974 ? 1964 so if I was supposed to be a great coach and I’ve gotten to know a lot of great coaches through my sports where I see him on the court and I go bass fishing with Bobby night I see him with his players all these others, the greatest coaches of our generation you know I met or interviewed or spent time with and they have one thing in common and that is they want to teach and they want to win and they respect whatever sport there in and they need for you to respect it too, you the athlete if you don’t respect the team concept you’re gone. And uh it’s especially true before, true before they become professionals. So my thing is you know I’m a jerk big but uh we did some, we danced around a little bit, adlibbed a little bit and its more socially economic I think with swimming because even in Ottumwa Iowa where I am from its small town but the doctors kids they had a swim team cause they had access to the country club pool we had access to ? so we didn’t even think of being on the swim team we played football or basketball or you know. I mean its just a you know they had access to the golf course so they played on the golf team we didn’t, we had access to the golf course after midnight we broke on there and pee’d on it, stole the flags. But uh you know so we, so it’s everywhere but especially here and I just you know seem to think that uh you know you deserve respect but not in sport, as a human being you have to earn it and you have to earn it by like I say teaching your kids to respect us for it and then ultimately winning and that’s what happens. And I think uh ? case uh you know there’s uh he recognize something in Terrence and expected more.

And its so weird because it was at a time when you think I would be smiling and I’d be mad but because I’m a coach I respected how far what he had done with these kids. I respect, I saw it was a miracle, I cant, and now I’m probably thinking I’ll see you next year, that’s good because we’ve got something going.
