Sound Bite: Paul Bettany – family film?
Well I don’t know whether it’s, it’s a family film, Secret Life of Bees, I suppose, I’m not sure if it’s a kid’s movie. Um but this is and I wanted to make a film for my children and it’s strangely, the script turned out and it and my son who was 9 at the time was reading the book, so (talks) it was a coincidence and something that I capitalized on in quite a Machiavellian way in order to make him think I was really cool.

Sound Bite: Paul Bettany – kids being motivation to make family film?
I think that it’s sort of definitely true, you know I’ve made very few films that I would let my children see so um so you know it was nice to be able to, I’m going to take them to ? and it’s gonna be they’ll finally understand what I do.

Sound Bite: Paul Bettany – did the quality jump off the script
Yes I think so in that it was sort of multilayered and uh sort of more ambiguous than they usually are, you know. I think that it was much more sort of complex um uh of children’s film than you usually see now.

Sound Bite: Paul Bettany – such a thing as intelligent film for kids
I think it is and I think that takes a, number one, children are sort of brighter than we give them credit for and able to hold contradictions and I also think that it’s important to make a film as a parent I find myself in movie theaters a lot, seeing a film for the 5th or 6th time and it’s important to make a film that the parents can actually watch and enjoy and get something from cause I have been that parent in that darkened cinema going, “Oh God make it end.”

Sound Bite: Paul Bettany – did he learn to juggle
I’m quite good with my hands but um I picked it up, it’s called ?, in 8 weeks. I’m sort of uh I’m good at picking things up quickly like that. (talks) I think it’s a sort of lucky thing about ? is that it’s this once you get going the learning curve is very steep and you can learn it very quickly and once you then set fire to the object it looks beautiful.

Sound Bite: Paul Bettany – Jennifer’s cameo
Yes that came, because she was in Italy and they were about to leave, my family were about to leave and I was sort of dreading it, and then I thought, “well why aren’t you, wait you should…” so we just put her in a dress and she spent an hour on set and we shot her.

Sound Bite: Paul Bettany – he and his family travel together?
Yes, well we, yes, we try to. We spend as, we’ve never you know we have a rule that we’re never away from each other for longer than 2 weeks so without significant time together afterward and that’s our rule.
