In: 15.35.55 Out: 15.35.31 Sound Bite: Christopher Nolan I think for me I first came to this story as a novel by Christopher Priest some years ago and I was just immediately fascinated by telling a cinematic version of this story that just deals with the mysterious world of stage magicians at the time when magicians were hugely important figures in the stakes for them were very high I mean there fascinating mysterious individuals and very obsessive in the way that they try to protect there inner most secrets. It’s a fascinating psychology and it’s a fascinating world. |

In: 15.36.39 Out: 15.37.17 Sound Bite: Christopher Nolan Yeah very much, I mean because when you deal with the concept of magic in a film you don’t want to show just tricks because with camera trickery, CG and everything we all know that those things are easy to do so to me to get across the sense of magic and illusions being performed it was about letting the narrative be the trick, letting the narrative be the illusion. And so the narrative itself, the story itself is structured according to the principles of how a magic trick is structured. Its three act structure and its use of miss direction and concepts like that, that’s how the story works. |

In: 15.37.31 Out: 15.38.14 Sound Bite: Christopher Nolan There massively obsessive and obviously you know that heightens the drama and so forth but I think there’s a very realistic basis for it which is that you have people who have built whole reputations, fame and fortune on by definition banal and utterly important secrets. So there really is no (?) and that’s the definition of what magicians do and so they have to protect there secrets in the strongest way possible there everything everything to do them. There the you know the foundation of there reputation is based on these fragile little details, it’s a fascinating position for a human character to be in. |

In: 15.38.39 Out: 15.39.31 Sound Bite: Christopher Nolan What I found in Scarlett is somebody who is extraordinarily beautiful and glamorous unquestionably but she also as well as having this great screen presence she has a sort of maturity beyond her years, perhaps because she started very young as an actress I don’t know but that maturity comes across so strongly in her charactizations. Really for this film that meant is you’re taking a character who could be so much less and she’s achieving with it this presence on screen that lets you know that even know she in a sense is used by both characters and pauses between them actually she’s always in control. She actually knows more about why these guys are doing what they’re doing then they do themselves and that comes from that presence she has. That maturity also makes her great fun to work with, she’s just a real professional and a pleasure to be around. |

In: 15.40.00 Out: 15.40.38 Sound Bite: Christopher Nolan Well the thing about Hugh is he’s an extraordinarily versatile performer he’s both a great movie actor but also a great stage performer and the character he plays in this film demands that very apparent eaze on stage, that command of that live audience that Hugh has. But I also felt in watching you know his work and watching what he did with Wolverine and so forth clearly he’s a great movie actor and also I felt there was so much that he’d be able to do with the part the he hasn’t got to show before and I think he gets to do things in this film ans show sides of himself that people really haven’t seen and I think people are really going to be tremendously impressed. |
