Well, I think the first thing to do was to really find things to admire in her because I think that when you play a character, you can’t criticize her. Whereas Nikki Gardner is the sort of character that I don’t really admire. Someone that prioritizes career over family and doesn’t do well with intimacy. So I just tried to locate some of her weak spots and I feel that somebody never needs to be in control that much unless they are afraid of being exposed in some way. So I kind of took that as a starting point and then I tried to get inside the lawyer mentality. A mentality that prioritizes professional over personal. I met this female lawyer here in LA and I said: What do you feel if you get someone a verdict of innocent if you believe they were guilty? And she just looked at me and she said: I’d say the prosecution didn’t do their job well enough. I thought, right, so its black and white, you can’t argue with that. It’s just straight down the line and that’s the mindset.

I don’t know, I mean, Nikki’s job isn’t actually in court but when you see the court in America is very different and much more dynamic and much more theatrical then it is in the UK. Attorneys don’t stand up and walk around in the UK like they do here. So, I think here the game and the drama and the theatre of it which turns into something quite a bit different.

I think just sort of doing in some ways sort of the the opposite of what you think the audience would expect. I think just when they don’t expect to see some vulnerability I think it is important to show a little or when they don’t expect to see some humor to just try and bring out a little humor. I mean it’s not a particularly humorous film but I think there are definitely some laughs in there. You know, just play up those little moments like Ryan’s first day at the office after they’ve met at the Disney hall and they’ve slept together. You know there is a certain sort of free tension that they both enjoy when they reacquaint themselves in a professional capacity.

I love the big screen. It’s such and exciting medium to work in. It’s so exciting that people can go close on you and see what your doing. You know in theatre you have to rely on the audience to edit it. You know, if they want a close up they have to look at you real hard (laughs) or use their binoculars but um, I love telling a story in real time. And I love repeating it and getting to play with it every night in the theatre. You know, you start at the beginning. I just did a wonderful Tennessee Williams play and he wrights so well that he just takes you on the journey. You get fantastic writing. Playwrights are often, their structures are always fantastic and often you get better writing in theatre than you do in film. Not in the case of this one, I have to say which I think we were very, very lucky with our writers
