The Nines Generic Interviews A01. HRN-1444 In: 10.49.10 Out: 10.26.25 Sound Bite: John August, Melissa McCarthy John- yeah the movie is incredibly insanely personal so that’s why I wrote the production notes and a I shot at my house and I used my real life and I used my real friends in the movie because it was very much my experience of the responsibilities of a creator whose creations and part of that responsibility is letting people into my house and into my life (talks) that’s my house it’s mostly recovered |

Sound Bite: John August, Melissa McCarthy Melissa- I think leading up to it the thought of playing myself was much more daunting I think originally you know the thing with three characters you go a little insane and you know your going to make them so wildly different and accents you know every bad trick from acting school comes to your mind you know I also kept mentioning the wig like john, What about wigs went like actor crazy till I calmed myself down I don’t know that center character like it was a bit of a hybrid it still was who needed to be in that part of the movie in that center section and it’s a bit of me it’s kinda like the film its like a weird it’s some weird fluid combination of me and maybe who I think I am John- or who I needed you to be, yeah Melissa is a version of her self just like ryan is sort of a version of me |

Sound Bite: John August, Melissa McCarthy John- Some of the characters were most of them I did a short film way back in 1998 Melissa- is that when it was John- in 98 or 99 called God which was a tiny little short film that we made while we were shooting Go and I took one of the characters from that I took myself I took Melissa and just some situations that had come up from other things a large part of it is based on a T.V. show that Melissa and I both worked on called D.C. that I created and Melissa was a actress in that went horribly south (talks) Melissa- when we were shooting part of the movie when I talk about Gilmore I hadn’t left and whats a little strange is that now right after we finished like I was leaving so then it becomes like the added layer of like were we predicting things like the movies already there’s so many different like states of reality and that’s a funny one to be talking about what and I had a feeling like maybe this was coming was ending my job at Gilmore you know after seven years its gonna end at some point so even that section like talking about that I was like I’m kind of talking about something I think is in like in my immediate future now it seems perfectly timed (talks) John- We’re not like crazy close no like you know we, I’ll always write her into every movie I can possibly can write her in and hopefully hopefully she can get free to do it Melissa- which makes perfect sense to me John- so but I mean so we’re friends but we’re not friends that hang out all the time |

John- yeah it was like 22 days I think was the schedule (talks) Melissa- I think I think ow Ryan handled those three characters was amazing like there’s such subtle differences but still really prominent I know that’s saying two crazy things but again like even like I said before there’s such a sych an instinct to go crazy and big and different and he kept it so kind of grounded and real but the energies of the characters were so different to me and it was such a fun thing to play off of because we were shooting so quickly and the you know it would change and like we’d do this for seven days amnd then suddenly I got to act with a whole different person but it was still you know Ryan it was delightful John- I always like people watching the movie saying like wow like how long a break did you take between part one and part two because like you know he lost weight and there was like 12 hours between those two sections so its just how an actor carries himself physically but it’s also just very small subtle choices that he was making that all three actors had to make to make sure each character was accurate to it’s section and wasn’t thinking about the other characters in the other section what you have to remember is that like you know the characters don’t know that there’s people in other sections so there just being themselves and it was just making sure each character was him or herself in their section |
