Sound Bite: Peter Berg – was it intense directing this movie
Um it was a challenging film. It was the first film at this kind of scale that I had done and to balance um all of these kind of crazy computer generated effects with real practical effects with stuntmen with Will Smith with computer generated Will Smiths, it was a lot of math, you know what I mean, you’re carrying around a lot of different ideas in your mind, and you know working on, you spend a lot of time blending different technologies when you make a movie like this. |

Sound Bite: Peter Berg – were a lot of scene shot on the street of LA
Yes. (talks) right well it’s, you know LA has lost so much production to Canada and other countries and other states. (talks) Yes and so they’re willing to give more to films now, excuse me. They’re willing to play ball more, so they wanted to keep the movie in LA, so you know we asked for big street shutdowns and neighborhood shutdowns, and they were like, oh man, they’re like, well people are just you so sick of filming in LA, you can’t do it, but then I really thought about it, and nobody’s really doing this in LA anymore, so like actually people aren’t sick, and the reaction we got generally was it’s great to see a big movie being shot in the streets of Los Angeles, and you know we felt really reconnected to the culture in LA making this film. |

Sound Bite: Peter Berg – was this film originally set in LA
It always was, and you know when we didn’t think LA would cooperate, we talked about moving it to New York or maybe even moving to Miami, but um but you know we all thought if LA would cooperate, and LA in the last 5 years has gone through such a renaissance. Downtown LA’s flourishing, there’s a subway system, a train system, there’s new freeways, the city’s really, you know coming together nicely and we felt like it would be original, like it wouldn’t feel tired to shoot the movie in LA. |

Sound Bite: Peter Berg – this film being unique
Uh it was what attracted us all to it. You know I love the idea of doing a summer superhero film. Couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do, and Will Smith called and said you should look at this movie, and when I read the character, you know this depressed, messed up, alcohol abusive superhero, I could see Will playing it, and it felt like a way of doing something you know much more original with the genre. |
