Well I love what he’s done. The evolution really came out of the fact is that he always did things that he wanted to do without an eye to commercialism. He agents were going crazy with him turning down a picture that’s offering him fifteen, eighteen, twenty million dollars. What’s happened is doing it his way as Mr. Sinatra would say has managed to make commercial movies. I mean he did the pirates movie because he wanted to do a movie he knew his kids would like and he’s always done things like that. I mean Ed Wood, we just had the greatest time working on that movie. And that’s what’s great about him, he’s a smart terrific guy, who happens to be enormously talented and that combination is gold. So whatever he does he’s going to be good at it and turns out these three pirates movies, I mean he’s done the next two as you probably know are going to be block busters and I’m so happy for him.

If you look at him in Ed Wood the things he did in that of course the nature of that film kind of demanded it in a sense. I mean Ed Wood had the reputation of being the worst director in the history of Hollywood, I mean the whole, that was a courageous performance as well I mean the man who wore sweaters, high heels and ladies wigs, I mean if you think about it, that’s a very audacious performance for a Hollywood movie star and black and white yet. I mean everything about it was off beat in a sense, but out of the fact that Johnny loved him and loved that script, as had I. So I mean he has taken a road that’s true to his heart and it’s taken him to the right places, by not concerning himself with commercialism in that sense and that’s a beautiful thing.

Its weird especially coming from my background and not being thrown in you know like future or the promise of being a pro skater meant nothing in my day and people who are doing acting know that there is fame and or fortune associated with it and so to come here with a sort of glazed look for all the cameras. Its just such a strange existence right here, I don’t know how to navigate I just kind walk by and if someone kind of calls my name I go over there.

I think Johnny Depp brought a new depth of what you would think of for Pirates of the Caribbean. I mean truly I just thought they’d use the ride as the flag ship for people to come see the movie and I’d be like ah its pirates its fun its you know a lot of action and when you see him you grow to love him and love his character you wanna see him go on and do other characters.

Well you know we’ve actually been thinking about how to make a pirate movie work for contemporary audiences about ten years before we started working on the movie. And in fact when we started working on Aladdin over at Disney we had pitched doing a pirate movie with super natural comedy based on Pirates of the Caribbean and at that point Disney nah not interested. But ten years later they finally caught up to us so we said yeah we can do that. It was really a matter of. The great thing about the pirates of the caribean ride is that it is the equivalent to what you want in a pirate movie which is different then a movie about pirates. A movie about pirates its all rickets and syphilis but a pirate movie means this romanticized concept of pirates and in the bride you have the comedy and the super natural. You know its exciting. There’s adventure. Really its about what is the tone I guess is what we took from the ride. Trying to recreate the experience of the ride as a movie if that makes sense.
