In: 14.56.29 Out: 14.57.16 Sound Bite: Diane Lane, Richard Gere – downtime on set Lane – Yes but you have uh… Gere – It’s got this kind of repetition, sitting chairs. (talks) Lane – No you’re not quite nailed to the seat and uh (talks) One after the other. There’s lots of pauses, lots of downtime, there’s a whole art to how to pass the waiting time on a film set for everything to be just right and ready for the actors to come in and do their part um, you can’t read a really good book or get too into anything. It has to be something very light like, I got into those jumbo crossword puzzles I think. (talks) Gere – Guitars always work for me. (talks) Lane – I wish I could play an instrument. I didn’t get that out of it. But words that are about 5 letters long. |

In: 14.57.17 Out: 14.57.50 Sound Bite: Diane Lane, Richard Gere – the beach was nice Lane – Yes, heavenly. It was heavenly. Gere – Yeah actually the location was great. There were spaces and we weren’t shooting outside all that much, we were in rooms. (talks) Lane – Yeah, quite awhile. Gere – so you could go out on the porch and there was this quiet space and Diane had a spot over there. Don’t bother here. And Richard had one over here. Don’t bother him. Lane – And the wind and the weather was ocean so we didn’t even hear the crew we could forget that there was actually a movie being filmed and we were in it. |

In: 14.57.55 Out: 14.58.12 Sound Bite: Diane Lane, Richard Gere – is the house authentic? Gere – Well it was helped, it was enhanced by the production designer. Lane – Absolutely. Gere – But it was basically that. That house that you know kind of inspired everyone, that said, “Oh, this can work here.” And other locations kind of fit in around it. |

In: 14.58.13 Out: 14.59.15 Sound Bite: Diane Lane, Richard Gere – who came to this project first Lane – Well Richard’s agent will tell you it’s Richard, and my agent will tell you, no I’m kidding. (talks) I don’t know, we spoke to each other. Gere – You know what it was, because I don’t think either of us was, it wasn’t like you get the script and you go, I’ve got to do this, it was… Lane – It’s so balanced between the chemistry of the two players. Gere – It had to be developed too, it was very schematic the original script that was sent to us, we probably got the same one. So it was over a couple of years really that it was a project that hadn’t found a director yet and hadn’t found the actors, it was just there and I think frankly the decisive point was when George emerged, George C. Wolf emerged and had an idea, got enthusiastic and saw how to do it and communicated that to us and finally said yeah great. Lane – And Denise Di Novi really wanted both of us together. She was convinced. Gere – She was convinced. She was convinced, yeah. |

In: 14.59.16 Out: 14.59.28 Sound Bite: Diane Lane, Richard Gere Gere – I was convinced. I was convinced. It was the only way this movie would work. I was convinced. Now I woke up now in the afternoon, ok. Lane – Now he’s had his coffee. |

In: 14.59.37 Out: 15.00.18 Sound Bite: Diane Lane, Richard Gere – a multi-layered story Lane – That touches so many so many areas. Gere – Well I think there was space enough here, it’s archetypically really interesting and real and our layers and our experience… Lane – And we were looking for love. Adults don’t have a lot of time when you have teenage kids and. Gere – And a career. Lane – And surgeon’s career and to be uh I don’t know what. Gere – And you’ve made choices to that point that don’t leave the space for that. It’s true. So it was an interesting thing to deal with and it was a challenge for us to make it as adult as we could within our own experiences and George’s and Diane’s and mine and I think we did that. I’m happy about that. |
