Sound Bite: George Clooney – the locations
That and we’d gone to Duluth to look at where the real towns were, and we were gonna shoot in February, and Duluth in February is 10 degrees below zero, and we thought well we’re never going to be able to shoot this movie like that, so the Carolinas was the perfect place to shoot.

Sound Bite: George Clooney – meeting the townspeople
Well you don’t get that much time to do that because I was prepping most of the time, so we were looking at uh scouting locations, there’s a lot, there’s a lot of scenes in this movie and a lot of locations and you know dozens of stadiums, so it was more about seeing, like you’d go to a stadium and you’d meet the people there and you’d go to this place and meet those people, so it was more about, I didn’t really get a chance to hang out.

Sound Bite: George Clooney – on directing and acting at the same time
Um more difficult to direct myself in a lead. I’ve done smaller parts in the films I’ve directed, and that was easy, uh but this one was trickier, a little trickier, but you know we got through it, you know such wonderful actors with Renee and John that I didn’t have a huge problem, you know.

Sound Bite: George Clooney – separating acting from directing
Yeah you can, it’s the funniest thing, because what it means is you do the scene, get slapped with mud, you get hit, and everybody jumps up and then I go “cut” and then I run across the field to the monitor and I watch the take, and I go, ok let’s do it again or let’s not do it again, so you’re basically running back and forth to the monitor after every take.

Sound Bite: George Clooney – a director covered in mud
Yeah, there’s a lot of film of that, it looks ridiculous.

Sound Bite: George Clooney – learning the craft of directing through other directors
Well, the Coen brothers, I mean Tony it was his first film, he did a wonderful job, but you know um I would think that the Coen brothers I stole from, I didn’t just learn from them, I stole from them. And Steven Soderbergh, I think Tony and I would both say that we learned form Steven Soderbergh a lot too. Uh and then you learn from all the guys that came before you, you know you look at you have to go back and look at Preston Sturges films and you have to look at Howard Hawks and George Stevens films and things like that.

Sound Bite: George Clooney – balancing comedy and drama
Well it wasn’t about sanity as much as it was about um my career as a director. After Good Night and Good Luck, and Syriana for that matter, everything that was being sent to me as a director were issues based, you know very big, you know the Richard Clark book or you know the new Valarie Plane story or one of those kinds of things, and I thought if I do that I’m sort of pigeonholed into this and I won’t be able to do anything but that, and for the first film Confessions to Good Night and Good Luck, I wanted to be able to mix it up and do something different, and so I wanted to do a comedy to make sure I didn’t get stuck.

Well I do, I have an old, one old regular car that I drive, but I have uh a Tango which an all electric call, I have the Tesla coming which is an all electric car, and I ride motorcycles most of the time, 85 percent of the time. It was supposed to rain today, it doesn’t look like it’s going to, but uh usually I ride motorcycles.

Well there’s a lot of green things you can do, turning off your lights, and you know, recycling and all those sort of things. I have a very difficult time, I don’t wanna be the spokesman for green, although I believe in it completely, but I have a sort of a spot that people could point at and say well, yeah, didn’t you fly on a private jet, and then I could harm that movement, so I don’t wanna be a spokesman for it, but I very much believe in it and do the best I can to uh to make sure that I don’t exploit the energy that’s around.
