Sound Bite: Ben Affleck – attraction to movie
Yeah I mean uhm it was although I was concerned in some ways because I knew that if anything becomes an issue movie or thats preachy in some way is really a turn off and people, its hard for people to hear that you know. The biggest thing for me as you said was the actors you know working with this group of actors, directing a movie for myself the first time I developed an even deeper appreciation for the extent to which actors really kind of make a movie work or not uh and so this list of people Russell Crowe, Helen Mirren, Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright Penn, Jason Bateman you know all the way down was so great I just wanted to kind of try to slot in there with these guys and you know make sure I just didn’t embarrass myself. And uh that was the real appeal and also the script was quite smart and the original BBC thing was you know was terrific so. |

Sound Bite: Ben Affleck – issues in movie
Yeah this is a movie that, you know will probably be the last movie that takes place in a newsroom, newspaper you know newspaper you know uh space and it will probably will also mark that moment where the internet more or less destroyed newspapers. What we’ll be left with, how we’ll evolve, I’m not sure the verdict isn’t in but uh it for sure is happening. |

Sound Bite: Ben Affleck – who he based the character off of
Well I really wanted to try to uhm find like the really granular level realism on this thing, I didn’t want to just be like ‘yeah I watch cable news, I know politicians’ you know I wanted to do research so I went to congress and I I you know and I asked these guys please can I spend some time with you please and they were really open because they, they were frustrated with the way they were portrayed in the past. So I got some nice access and got to meet a lot of guys and really watch them behave and listen to the way they talk and see how they carry themselves and see them you know what they did with their day, what their routines were and that was extremely helpful and so I kind of based it on an aggregation of different character traits of different people. Uhm so their was no one particular model, there’s a pretty extraordinary guy who has a lot in common with this character uhm named Patrick Murphy uhmm but he didn’t have any negative qualities of this guy. He’s a guy from Philadelphia who’s an Iraq war vet who came back and is an amazing uh young congressman. But its uhm, I also met with a ton of other guys and and that uh gave me a sense, I was really basing it more on like just the overall feel of who these people were and then I sort of put the little things together from there. |

Sound Bite: Ben Affleck – on politics now
I think that you know we have pretty good leadership right now in Washington right now but uhm but we have a very serious crisis and that uh we need to be re-highly responsive particularly to the banking crisis, I think the banks are uhm we gotta fix the banks or nothing is going to work. And I think uh you know hopefully we’ll find a way to do it in a bipartisan way but I think the issue is to to get it done and you know it’s a very dangerous scary time and it may either producer some you know political heroics or or uhm opportunities may be lost but we’re also, the countries really changing you know our place in the world globally is changing, there’s a huge amount of uncertainty about whether we’ll really be able to return to this kind of preeminence or whether this marks C Change in the position of the United States. You know whether it means that you know we’re bobbing and floating on global, this sort of tides on the global markets more than dominating them you know and uh in the same way that this marks a time when the newspapers shift away. So its very uncertain, its not a time where you can just sort of like stay the course you know but its exciting in that you know we may be able to make some real improvements to people lives through Washington that hasn’t happened in a long time. |
