Sound Bite: Ben Stiller – looked difficult to wear all the hats he did
Yeah it was you know, it was also sort of the fun of making the movie was just the chance to work on a big scale and to do stuff like that I hadn’t had a chance to do before, so you know you just sort of hire the best possible people you can to um you know who do that all the time in terms of like special effects and visual effects and working with a great crew and actors and you just gotta support yourself as much as possible.

Sound Bite: Ben Stiller – spoof on pampered actors
I don’t know what you’re talking about. Um no, I mean the, you know, that’s sort of like you know hopefully part of the fun of the movie is that we’re making fun of ourselves and the ridiculousness of moviemaking and you know it’s a strange world

Sound Bite: Ben Stiller – actors don’t ask to be pampered it just happens
Well that’s what I mean it’s a strange world like sometimes there’s stuff that you can control and sometimes stuff you ask for and stuff you don’t and people are sort of insulating themselves because you’re getting a lot of feedback in the world both positive and negative and too much of either can be, distort your reality, and nothing, getting nothing back can distort your reality too because then you’re like living in a vacuum so people have to you know it’s hard to find that balance in terms of just your everyday existence I think.

Sound Bite: Ben Stiller – how did he approach Tom for this roll
Um I just you know I know Tom and um I think he’s really funny in a way that people haven’t seen him before. Though I’ve seen the humor in roles that he’s done, I think he’s a great actor and um he’s always just been a champion of the movie and so uh and he had the idea he thought this was a really funny idea for a character and it came from him so.

Sound Bite: Ben Stiller – Tom will take a small part of a movie he wants to be a part of
Yeah, well he loves movies, and he loves moviemaking and uh he was a great uh I would show him a cut of the movie and he would give me notes on the film that I would ask for that had nothing to do with his character because he has such a great sense of story. The guy is just, I’m a big fan.

Sound Bite: Ben Stiller – where did he come up with the idea for a Platoon-like movie
Well, it’s just uh, you know I go back probably like to 1987, I was in Empire of the Sun which is the closest thing to a war movie that I’ve been in. Around that time they were making Platoon and Hamburger Hill and a lot of friends who were in those movies and uh I auditioned for some of them and just that world was happening, it always seemed fun to me the idea of actors going off and doing this fake boot camps and talking about like it changed their lives, um which I understand it probably did but it’s nothing compared to the real reality of war so that satirizing that aspect of it was always interesting to me, and uh I loved those movies I think that they’re you know it’s a very uniquely American genre and uh something that hadn’t been sort of uh done in a comedic way.
