SOT.: Quincy Jones
Quincy: She should had this a long time ago…you talk about a pioneer…you talk about Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee and Ozzie Davis…that’s how it all started…so we were all together in New York starving to death….Im just very thrilled for her it should have happened a long time ago….now is as good as ever. |

SOT: Carrie Washington
Carrie: I absolutely would not have the career that I have in the way that I have it and how the way I do it…If It wasn’t for Ruby Dee…she has such a profound impact on this community as a woman…as an actress…a civil rights leader…I feel forever just grateful to her. |

SOT: Ruby Dee
Ruby: For a long time I haven’t thought of the Hollywood scene or the Broadway scene…or anything like that…I think the only avenue and outlet for the things I have to do…so I have been working….from street corners to town halls and Carnegie…you know at the Capitol…I grew up in Harlem…I believe in Community Theatre…and I believe in young film makers coming along…so I have always found something…I am writing now…I am what you might call a work a day actor…I’m on the assembly line…so they put me in charge of one branch of the factory…or something like that…for that am grateful…oh I can be a foreman now… |

SOT: Suzanne De Passe
Suzanne: I think am most excited about …today it seems that there are so many more young African American, Latino women in the work force behind the camera and doing extraordinary things and I think…by some how celebrating me is a way to let people know that it’s possible to do this behind the scenes stuff and really be rewarded not only in terms what you love to do…but along the way you get some acknowledgement …a lot more people would go…I cant sing…I cant dance…but I can do that. |

SOT: Jada Pinkett Smith
Jada: I felt honored when Essence called me and said they were honoring me….but when they said I was gonna be honored with Ruby Dee…I’m like Ruby is a legend….I cant be on the same stage with Ruby…I haven’t done half the accomplishments you know…Ruby has done…but I just took it in stride…I just said Ok…you know what I mean…that alone for me…like I said…it says a lot…because Essence watched me as a wild child…a now as a mature woman…and for them to feel though they can honor me on the same day as someone like Ruby Dee …I feel like I’ve been doing something. |

SOT: Jurnee Smollett
Jurnee: It really makes me humble…you know to be able to stand to woman like that…woman who have made this village for me in a way…you know they have made up a village of women that I can turn too…women I can draw inspiration from…I mean I look to the career choices that Jada and Ruby Dee have made in throughout their careers…they’ve always maintane their intergrity and yet always defied the face that society wants to put on us….. ….And so to be standing next to them I cant believe it but Iam truly…. honored and truly humble.. |
