Sound Bite: Ryan Gosling - On similarities between his life and his character.
Well, I mean, and it wasn’t like that at the time, when I made the film, but I do think that there is something that I find really human about him in the sense that he’s full of himself and he is supposed to be the good guy but he’s not that good. He’s just not bad, and as long as he’s not bad he’s ok with that. Kind of narcissistic and self obsessed and all those things. He’s put in this situation where he has got to do… ya know if he lets this woman die for a promotion then he will officially be they kind of guy he does not want to be so he reluctantly has to do the right thing. He is struggling with the fact that he is not naturally heroic. He is not really that good of a guy. He’s kind of a jerk, yet he does not want to be bad so he has to find some kind of balance within that.
Sound Bite: Ryan Gosling - On the dynamics of tension between characters.
Well its easy with Anthony. He is one of the greatest Actors ever. Everything he does is so visceral that it is for you as well and it’s different every time and he just makes it feel fresh every time. You know he can be really intimidating so it’s easy to be intimidated by him, but at the same time he can be one of the most charming, lovely, loving, happy, funny, prolific, creative people I’ve met too so it becomes difficult and a challenge because you admire him so much that your trying to, when your playing a character that has so much disgust for the character you have to find a way to act that because you admire this person so much.
Sound Bite: Ryan Gosling - On working with director Gregory Hoblit.
It’s great because he’s like a kid, he loves movies so much. When he makes a movie he’s like (hand rubbing together) so excited, you know, he loves it. He is so excited every day. He is happy to be on set. He loves making movies. He gets so excited about the scenes, he gets so enthusiastic, it’s really fun to be around that type of energy.
Sound Bite: Ryan Gosling - On what gets him excited about a role.
Well, I think it… you know obviously every actor is looking for great roles and obviously there aren’t many of them so when you read one you just know. But then there are movies that need work but they are your best option or there is something in it that you gravitate towards or there is one piece of it that you like or the character, the director or the story. It’s always different and your always looking for something that is of a certain quality.
Sound Bite: Ryan Gosling - On pressure of higher expectations.
Well, I think that their probably are and in a way I’m not used to that. I’m used to trying to prove myself, you know and in a way I feel like there is something expected of me and I have to prove people right and all that. But at the same time, I don’t really think about it because the places that I made my decisions from up to this point I just will try to stick to that and hope that works out.
